Lenovo is apparently pushing back its estimated ship date for the IdeaPad S10 laptop – by a full two months. When I ordered the netbook a few weeks ago Lenovo said it would ship on September 9th. But after spending much of yesterday hitting refresh on the order status page I saw no movement. When I checked again this morning, I saw a new date: 11/18/08.

I’m not the only one. Liliputing reader PK says his order status has been updated as well.

If the laptop’s not ready to ship, or if Lenovo doesn’t have enoug in stock, that’s fine. But I don’t understand why the company would wait until the day after the original estimated ship date to update its status page. And more importantly, I had to check my order status on Lenovo’s web site to find out about the delay. Lenovo has yet to send me an email or give me a phone call.

It does look like Lenovo is getting a few units out the door. As Eee PC News.de reports, a Chinese web site has posted one of the first reviews of the laptop, complete with a bunch of pictures. Check out a few pictures of the RAM and HDD access panels after the break.

Update: A number of people with estimated ship dates of 9/16 or 9/23 have noted that their order status has not changed. While it’s certainly possible that these units will ship on time, my understanding is that customers who originally saw a 9/09 ship date were among the first to put in their orders. And I’ve seen numerous reports of these orders being delayed. My guess is that Lenovo will update the status on the 9/16 and 9/23 orders after those dates come and go.

  1. Dang, I’m still saying November. I noticed in the foreign language unboxing post that their unit shipped with 1GB of memory. Is that a custom config, something unique to the region, or will we all get it? Still not sure if I’m going to cancel… if I see a good deal on a 6 cell Wind I may partake. And rumor has it Apple’s got some new notebooks coming within a month. We shall see.

    1. The Eee PC 1000H is down to $450 now, and you can pick up a 6 cell Acer
Aspire One with Windows XP for $399. The longer it takes Lenovo to get their
computer to market, the less of a bargain it’s going to seem.

      1. Where can you get an Aspire One 6-cell? I ordered one from PC Connections because they told me that they had a shipment scheduled to arrive on 9/18 and they had enough for pending orders and then some. Well, the date has come and gone and, surprise! It is now showing up as “back-ordered.” Not that they have had the courtesy of sending me an email to notify e of the “delay” – I had to look it up myself! This is total, absolute BS on the part of these manufacturers and retailers.

  2. I also ordered on 8/19 with an estimated ship of 9/16. Today when I checked it had been updated to an estimated ship date of 10/14/08.

Also, right after initially ordering I got this note:
Please note that we recently experienced a web error which caused the Graphics Card of your S10 to be listed erroneously. The correct
card that is configured into the unit is the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950. Unfortunately, we are unable to honor the original
component, as it is not available for the system you ordered.

Doesn’t i nstill too much confidence in the company. Luckily I’m not terribly in need of a new laptop, just thought it was fun. Any more hiccups though and I’ll cancel and write to the Better Business Bureau.

  3. Canceled my order. Between the complete confusion about the system configuration, the lack of straight answers from customer support, and the utter lack of communication regarding order status, my impression of Lenovo is poor. If this is their standard operating procedure *before* they’ve got my money, I shudder to think about what their post-sale experience is like.

    Well done, Lenovo.

  4. Well the good thing about the current marketplace is that you all have other choices (Asus, Dell, Acer, MSI, etc). No need to condone Lenovo’s poor business practice by patiently waiting for months to see if and when they have a product, mush less how it compares to the competition. From preliminary reports I see nothing especially compelling abou the S10 anyhow.

    1. If you have any further information, as far as delivery is concerned, please let me know this….

  5. My shipping status is still showing Sept 5th. I called today to see what was happening and the Shipping Date they gave me was the Week of November 16th. I don’t understand how the wait could go from two weeks after I ordered it to two and a half months without some major misscomunication

    1. Terrible company policy to misinform customers….it is the worst possible feeling to look forward to a new product and be told it won’t be available for another 2 months!!

      1. that’s a rather shallow outlook on life. you’ll be lucky indeed if this is the worst thing that ever happens to you.

  6. I’ve purchased 2 items from Lenovo’s website, a laptop last summer and a battery a couple of weeks ago. Both times I received a ludicrous ship date, and both times the item arrived at my door within 2 weeks. I think it may just be Lenovo’s SOP.

  7. I ordered yesterday and the ship date is 11/17. Something odd is going on here.

(You can still place an order if you go through Google or one of the shopping sites.)

  8. Mine still ships on 9/23/08. its probably that particular configuration that is delayed.

  9. I ordered on August 19, and it has been almost a month already since I ordered it. I got my order in at 8:46am PST, so I was one of the first in line. Now my date has been pushed back to 11/18 as well. That is complete BS. You should not have taken orders for a product you can’t ship for a full 3 months.
