Unboxing the Asus Eee PC 1000H - VIDEO

Sure, the Asus Eee PC 1000H has been out for a little while now and you may have already seen an unboxing video or two. But you haven’t seen my unboxing video yet, have you? So check it out:

I’ve been playing with the laptop for about a half hour, and so far I’m very impressed. It addresses almost every issue I’ve had with the Eee CP 701 and the HP Mini-Note:

  • The onboard graphics and CPU are powerful enough to handle multitasking and multimedia. It plays Hulu videos flawlessly.
  • The 1024 x 600 pixel display doesn’t manage to fit as much on the screen as the 1280 x 768 pixel display, but it handles most web sites (including this one) just fine, and no squinting is necessary when looking at this computer.
  • The keyboard is much larger and easier to type on than the Eee PC 701 keyboard. It’s not quite as easy to touch type on as the HP Mini-Note.
  • The touchpad is nice and wide, and has two trackpad buttons. But I still prefer to plug in a travel mouse.
  • Asus ships a padded slip case for the computer
  • The power brick and AC adapter are relatively small, and feature a two-prong plug that goes many places the HP Mini-Note three-prong plug will not.

On the down sde, the built in speakers are pretty quiet. And the webcam is a bit choppy, at least with the included software. I’ll try another application soon.

I was mildly surprised to note that Asus ships the Eee PC 1000H with Microsoft Works and StarOffice rather than OpenOffice.org. Of course, StarOffice and OpenOffice.org are basically the same office suite. But it seemed like an odd choice.

Taking the day off, in the meantime enjoy this video

I’ll be traveling for most of today so don’t expect much in the way of updates. But to tide you over, check out jkOnTheRun’s video unboxing of the Acer Aspire One laptop.

While you may think you know everything there is to know about the Aspire One by now, if you’ve got 26 minutes on your hands you should definitely check out the video. Mobile experts Kevin Tofel and James Kendrick discuss the computer which is now available at Circuit City stores at length.

In relates news, tnkgrl recently picked one up as well. And while Acer doesn’t make it easy to upgrade the RAM (no access panel), she’s discovered that if you take the case apart you can easily upgrade the RAM and perform all sorts of other hacks. Next up, she plans to swap out the 8GB SSD for a 60GB HDD.

Gigabyte M912 gets unboxed… again

Sure, we saw Chippy unbox a Gigabyte M912 the other day. But he got his hands on a pre-production unit. Laptop Magazine, on the other hand, found an eBay seller who was willing to ship a unit with the official packaging from Taiwan.

The packaging looks pretty decent. And the computer comes with a nice case, a 6 cell battery, and a few other goodies. Laptop Magazine will soon be putting the computer through the paces and posting the results. But there are already three things I can tell you about the Gigabyte M912:

  • It’s one of the only netbook-class computers to include a swiveling touchscreen for use in tablet mode.
  • It costs substantially more than the entry level netbooks like the Asus Eee PC 701.
  • The M912 may not ever be released in the US, so it’s good to know it can be found on eBay.

MSI Wind unboxed: Now shipping in the US

In case you had any doubts that the MSI Wind U100 laptop was actually shipping in the US, Adam Smith managed to find one at a Fry’s store near San Diego, California.

Not a lot of surprises in the box. You get a computer, battery, power cable, and a case. There are also 3 CDs, including a Windows XP SP3 recovery disc, a driver disc, and a CD-R which contains… something. Adam’s guessing it’s a last minute update. I’d guess it was something that the folks at Fry’s slipped into the box, but the disc says Office Depot on it, so maybe not.

Asus Eee PC 1000H unboxing video

As I reported earlier this week, the Asus Eee PC 1000 and Eee PC 1000H are now on sale in Taiwan. So the folks over at TweakTown wandered over to a store and picked themselves up an Eee PC 1000H and shot a little unboxing video.
As you can see in the video, the Taiwanese version comes with a localized version of Windows XP. In other words, many of the menus and text areas are in Chinese, which isn’t surprising. But like earlier versions of the Eee PC, Asus includes a Windows XP driver disc in the box, even if you buy a version running Windows XP. That means you can easily install an English version of Windows yourself if you’re so inclined. It may also be possible to change the language manually, but I’ve never tried doing that myself. If you’ve got any tips for converting a Chinese version of Windows to an English version, let us know in the comments.
Aside from the PC and the driver disc, here’s what’s in the box:
  • Slip case
  • Manual (in Chinese)
  • Battery
  • Power cord and adapter
  • LCD cleaning cloth
TweakTown also confirms that the Eee PC 1000H is running Windows XP SP3.

Unboxing the HP 2133 Mini-Note

My HP 2133 Mini-Note has arrived. The battery is charging up and I’m getting ready to put it through the paces. But in the meantime, I thought I’d share this little unboxing video with y’all.

Sorry, no cat interruptions this time. But she did discover the box that fell onto the floor and has been having a jolly time playing with it for the last few minutes.

Update: I forgot to mention, not only is there no driver/restore DVD in the box. There’s no slip cover. I wasn’t really expecting a case, as HP and a number of other companies make a pretty penny selling cases. But a slip cover like the one that comes with the Eee PC would have been nice, since it would protect the notebook from scuffs when you throw it in a bag.

HP 2133 Mini-Note unboxing photos start to appear

I’m still waiting (im)patiently for my HP 2133 Mini-Note to arrive. But as reported, some folks are already getting theirs from friendly UPS delivery people. Engadget got their hands on what seem to be the first unboxing photos to make the rounds.

You can check out a complete gallery over at their site. But ther’s really not that much to see. Small laptop, very few accessories. Looks like you get a power adapter, a battery, warranty, and a user guide on a disc. It’s not quite clear if we’re looking at the Linux or Windows model here, so I’m not sure what’s on the disc.

Eee PC 900 has 2 separate solid state disks, not just two partitions

Apparently Asus didn’t just divide the storage on the Eee PC 900 into two separate partitions like I’d originally thought. No, they instead have put two separate solid state disks in each unit. Both the Linux and Windows XP models will have 4GB of flash storage soldered to the motherboard, and the Linux version will have a 16GB SSD in a PCIe slot while the Windows version will have an 8GB SSD.

On the one hand, this means that users should be able to upgrade their storage relatively easily. On the other hand, it means you’re pretty much stuck with 4GB for your system files, which could be kind of annoying.

In other news, Bit-Tech has some unboxing photos, this time in English. They’ve also got word on K pricing £329, which is about $647 US. That’s significantly more than the Hong Kong version which is expected to sell for the equivalent of $513 US.

Eee PC 900 gets the unboxing treatment

It looks like we have our first Eee PC 900 unboxing to report! The folks at XEPC.org somehow managed to get their hands on the new model, and they’ve posted a slew of pictures of the Eee PC 900 in and out of its box.

As expected, the new computer looks almost exactly the same as the Eee PC 700 series. But it has a larger screen, which means the speakers have been moved to the bottom of the unit. XEPC.org also confirms the basic specs:

  • 1024 x 600 screen
  • 1GB RAM
  • 12GB SSD
  • 1.3 MP webcam
  • Larger touchpad
  • larger 12v power brick for faster charging

One thing to note is that this unit does seem to have the RAM access panel on the back which is missing in some models. That means you should be able to upgrade the 1GB of RAM to at least 2GB just by unscrewing the panel, popping out the RAM and replacing it with a new stick.

We also know now that it comes with an “Intel Mobile” CPU, but no word on whether this is the same 900MHz Celeron processor we’ve come to know and overclock, or another chip. Also no word on how exactly XEPC got their hands on this unit, but the site confirms that it should be hitting the streets in mid-April.
