Toshiba Dynabook UX (NB200) reviewed

toshiba-nb200-pm

As previously reported, it appears the Toshiba Mini NB200 (or Dynabook UX if you happen to live in Japan), comes in at least two versions. There’s a cheaper, plasticky version with wider keys. And there’s a nicer, metallic model with a chiclet-style keyboard reminiscent of the keyboard on the Asus Eee PC 1000HE. Portable Monkey has posted a review of the latter model.

If you’re thinking about picking up a Toshiba Mini NB200, you should check out the detailed review. But here are some of the highlights:

  • Excellent build quality
  • Decent keyboard
  • Large keyboard with two distinct buttons but no multi-touch support
  • Speakers are clear but quiet
  • Glossy screen
  • Lasts for about 3.5 hours with a 3 cell battery

Portable Monkey also reports that the RAM can be upgraded to 2GB, despite the fact that Toshiba says the netbook maxes out at 1GB.

Closer look at the Toshiba NB200-11H and 11L

Toshiba NB200-11H and NB200-11L

We already knew that the Toshiba NB200 had another name. In Japan, it will be called the Toshiba Dynabook UX. But it turns out that even in Europe not all Toshiba NB200’s are created equal. Sascha from NetbookNews.de got a chance to spend some time with two different versions of Toshiba’s latest netbook: The Toshiba NB200-11H and the Toshiba NB200-11L.

It looks like the NB200-11H will be the top of the line item, with a metallic (possibly aluminum) chassis and a chiclet-style keyboard that’s reminiscent of the keyboards found on newer Asus Eee PC netbooks. The NB200-11L, by contrast has a black plastic case and flatter keys that are placed closer together. Sascha says it more closely resembles the keyboards found on the Dell Inspiron Mini 10 and HP Mini 1000.

It’s likely that the NB200-11L will sell for a little less than the NB200-11H, although final pricing hasn’t been revealed yet.

Sascha was also impressed with the responsive touchpad and its two distinct buttons. And in case you couldn’t tell from the photo, both netbooks feature glossy displays.
