Toshiba Dynabook UX gets the WiMAX treatment

Toshiba is adding WiMAX capabilities to a handful of its notebooks, including the Toshiba Dynabook UX, which is the Japanese version of the Toshiba Mini NB200 which is available in the US and Europe.

Like its Western counterparts, the Dynabook UX has a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and runs Windows XP Home. In addition to WiMAX, the computer sports 802.11b/g WiFi and Bluetooth wireless modules.

I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for WiMAX support on the NB200, since the wireless standard isn’t very widespread in the countries where the netbook is sold under this name yet. But strange things have happened.

Toshiba Dynabook UX (NB200) reviewed

toshiba-nb200-pm

As previously reported, it appears the Toshiba Mini NB200 (or Dynabook UX if you happen to live in Japan), comes in at least two versions. There’s a cheaper, plasticky version with wider keys. And there’s a nicer, metallic model with a chiclet-style keyboard reminiscent of the keyboard on the Asus Eee PC 1000HE. Portable Monkey has posted a review of the latter model.

If you’re thinking about picking up a Toshiba Mini NB200, you should check out the detailed review. But here are some of the highlights:

  • Excellent build quality
  • Decent keyboard
  • Large keyboard with two distinct buttons but no multi-touch support
  • Speakers are clear but quiet
  • Glossy screen
  • Lasts for about 3.5 hours with a 3 cell battery

Portable Monkey also reports that the RAM can be upgraded to 2GB, despite the fact that Toshiba says the netbook maxes out at 1GB.

Toshiba Mini NB200 unboxed, toyed with

nb200-unboxed

The Toshiba Mini NB200, also known as the Dynabook UX is now on sale in Japan. And since netbook blog Portable Monkey happens to be based on Japan, they were able to pick one up and start to put it through its paces.

The long and short of it is that Toshiba’s first 10 inch netbok looks like a huge improvement over the 8.9 inch Toshiba NB100. The new model has an excellent metallic build with a keyboard that looks a lot like the one on the Asus Eee PC 1000HE, although Portable Monkey says it looks more like a Sony Vaio P keyboard thanks to the silver color. The touchpad is nice and wide, and has two separate buttons.

It looks like the netbook shoudl be easy to upgrade, since there are access panels on the bottom for the RAM, hard drive, and other components.

Closer look at the Toshiba NB200 – Video

nb200-videoThe Toshiba Satellite NB200 is a computer with many names. OK, just two. In Europe, it’s the NB200. In Japan it’s the Dynabook UX. But whatever you call it, the NB200 looks like a big step up from the original Toshiba NB100, an 8.9 inch netbook that was hampered by a cramped keyboard.

The folks at Megawhat.tv got a chance to check out the Toshiba Satellite NB200 at a UK event, and they seem pretty impressed. More importantly, they uploaded a video which gives us a better look at the computer’s hardware. Aside from an ugly looking 6-cell battery which sticks out of the back of the unit, the NB200 looks pretty slick. It has a nice finish, a keyboard that reminds me of the Asus Eee PC 1000HE keyboard, and a 10.2 inch display.

You can check out the video after the break.

Toshiba Mini NB200: Dynabook UX for the UK market

toshiba-mini-nb200Toshiba UK has announced the launch of a new netbook called the Mini NB200. If it looks familiar, that’s because the NB200 appears to be identical to the Toshiba Dynabook UX that was launched in Japan the other day.

The Mini NB200 has a 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, a choice of a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 or 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, 802.11b/g WiFi and up to 9 hours of battery life.

The mini-laptop will be available in the UK starting in May with a starting price of £319 or about $465 US, which seems a lot more reasonable than the $604 price tag the Dynabook UX carriers in Japan.

Toshiba unveils 10 inch Dynabook UX netbook

dynabook-ux

Toshiba is launching its second foray into the netbook space, this time with a mini-laptop sporting a 10.1 inch display.

The company’s Satellite NB100 series of netbooks, which was never released in the US, had smaller 8.9 inch displays and rather cramped keyboards. But the new Toshiba Dynabook UX series has a 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 CPU, Integrated GMA 950 graphics, 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive. It runs Windows XP Home and includes 802.11b/g WiFi.

The Dynabook UX comes in brown or white, and a choice of batteries. Toshiba says the standard battery should last for about 4 hours, while the extended battery could provide up to 10 hours of use.

The new netbook is a bit slimmer than the NB100, measuring 10.4″ x 7.6″ x 1.2″. It weighs less than 2.9 pounds. The Dynabook UX will be available in Japan this Friday for between ¥60,000 to ¥70,000 or about $604 and $705 US. No word on if and when the laptop will be available in the US, but I’d venture a guess that it would sell for considerably less money in the states.
