Sharp Willcom D4: First Atom PC coming to the US (for a pretty penny)

That Sharp Willcom D4 ultramobile computer I told you about a few weeks ago appears to be headed stateside. But while Japanese customers will be able to pick up a D4 for the equivalent of $395 US with a wireless subscription plan, nobody’s subsidizing the US model. And that means you’ll have to shell out more than $1500 to get your hands on the D4.

Now, generally I don’t focus on high priced UMPCs on this blog. I’m much more interested in low cost ultraportables that the average computer geek can actually afford. But the Sharp Willcom D4 is notable since it could be the first PC running the new Intel Atom chip to market. The D4’s specs look pretty impressive (but not impressive enough for me to pull out the wallet):

  • 1.33GHz Intel Atom processor
  • 5 inch 1024 x 600 pixel display
  • 1GB RAM
  • 40GB hard drive
  • 64 key slide-out keyboard
  • Windows Vista Home Premium

All this in a package that’s just 192 mm x 26 mm and weighs just 470 grams, or about 1 pound.

Sharp unveils first Atom-based UMPC

Sharp has just announced what is being described as the first computer that will hit the market using Intel’s new low-voltage, high-power Atom processor. The Sharp D4 will be out in Japan in June for Â¥39,800 or about $395 US. But there’s a catch. Users will also have to purchase a 2-year data plan for Â¥2,100 per month, more than doubling the price. Engadget reports you can also pick up a D4 with no data plan, but it will set you back Â¥128,600 or about $1250 US.

Still, the D4 looks pretty sweet:

  • 1.33GHz Atom processor
  • 5 inch 1024 x 600 pixel display
  • 1GB RAM
  • 40GB hard drive
  • 2 MP camera
  • 64-key slide-out keyboard
  • WiFi and Bluetooth
  • Windows Vista Home Premium and Microsoft Office Personal 2007
  • Dimensions: 192 mm x 26 mm
  • Weight: 470 grams
  • Optional Bluetooth phone handset
  • Optional GPS receiver

While the Sharp D4 is the first Atom-based computer to get a release date, it certainly won’t be the last. Intel officials say 20 more devices will be ready to ship soon.
