Red Fox WizBook 890i coming to the Philippines?

wizbook 890i

Computer maker Red Fox offers a handful of netbooks in the Philippines, with screen sizes ranging from 8.9 inches to 10 inches. Up until now the company’s only 8.9 inch model features a 500MHz AMD Geode LX800 processor. But now Red Fox has introduced the WizBook 890i, which features a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU.

The rest of the netbook’s specs look pretty standard. It has 120GB hard drive, 1GB of RAM, 1.3MP webcam, and a 3800mAh battery which should provide up to 4 hours of run time. There are a few things that set the WizBook 890i apart from the crowd (if not from Red Fox’s other netbooks) though, including support for 802.11a/b/g and an ExpressCard slot. Neither of these features make the 890i unique, but it is pretty rare to find 802.11a support and/or an ExpressCard in a netbook, especially one with an 8.9 inch screen.

The netbook weighs 1.1kg and will only be available in red. No word on pricing or a release date.

Red Fox WizBook N1020i w/Bluetooth 3.0 reviewed

n1020i

The Red Fox WizBook N1020i has a few things that set it apart from other netbooks. It comes in a range of 5 different colors. And it has an ExpressCard/34 expansion slot. But it’s not the only netbook with those features. Here’s one that you won’t find on any other mini-laptop available today: It includes Bluetooth 3.0.

The problem is that as far as I’m aware, there aren’t very many peripherals that support the Blutooth 3.0 standard yet, so you probably won’t notice much of a speed improvement. And that’s exactly what Electronic Pulp’s David Gonzales found when he reviewed the WizBook N1020i. He wasn’t particularly impressed with the Bluetooth speed or the inclusion of the ExpressCard slot, since he didn’t have much need for either. He did like the pretty colors though.

The rest of the netbook’s specs are standard fare, including 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU, and a 10.2 inch display. It includes a 3 cell battery, which Gonzales says is good for about 3.5 hours of run time. And the odds of you finding this netbook outside of the Philippines anytime soon are less than great.

Red Fox launches Wizbook N1021i (with Bluetooth 3.0?)

wizbook n1021i

Philippine computer company Red Fox is launching an update to its line of Wizbook netbooks. And while the name conjures up pictures of waterfalls, flowing streams, and OK, urinals, there’s one reason to pay very close attention to this netbook. Maybe. According to the press release, it features Bluetooth 3.0, which would make it the first netbook I’m aware of to support the latest Bluetooth standard. On the other hand, the same press release says that Bluetooth 3.0 can handle transfer speeds up to 480 Mbits/second, while the official Bluetooth wep page says that speeds top out at 24Mbps. So I’m going to take this claim with a grain of salt.

The rest of the specs for the Wizbook N1021i look pretty standard. The Wizbook N1020i features a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and 10.2 inch display and runs Windows XP Home. It includes 802.11b/g WiFi, a webcam, flash card reader, and a 4600mAh battery and weighs about 2.6 pounds. According to the press release, there’s also an ExpressCard/34 slot, but I’m going to take that with another grain of salt until I actually see a picture of this netbok showing the ExpressCard slot.

Update: The folks at Electronic Pulp got to spend some hands-on time with the netbook, and report that it does indeed come with Bluetooth 3.0 support. They haven’t had a chance to put the wireless transfer speed to the test yet though.

Red Fox Wizbook1020i: This time it’s Atom-based

Last time we’d heard from computer maker Red Fox, the company was pushing a netbook called the Wizbook800 with a pokey 400MHz AMD Geode processor. Now Red Fox is back with two new models, the Wizbook1020i and the Wizbook800lx.

As you’ve probably guessed, the Wizbook800lx is an upgraded version of the earlier model. It still has the same 8 inch, 800 x 480 pixel display, but it has 1GB of RAM, a 60GB hard drive, and a higher capacity battery which should be good for up to 4 hours. And while the Wizbook800lx still uses an AMD Geode CPU, the new model upgrades to a 600MHz processor.

The Wizbook1020i looks more like your typical netbook with a 10.2 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, an 80GB hard drive, 1GB of RAM, and a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU. Like its little cousin, the 1020i has a 4000mAh battery. It also has a 3-in-1 memory card reader, 2 USB slots, and a webcam. The netbook comes in white, black, and red-black.

Red Fox Wizbook800: Underpowered Eee PC competitor

You’ll notice this headline says the Wizbook800 is an Eee PC competitor, not a killer. That’s because this little computer from Red Fox Technologies may come in a small, lightweight case and feature a nice roomy(ish) 20Gb hard drive. But it packs a sluggish AMD LX700 400MHz which is going to have a tough time keeping up with the 900MHz Intel Celeron chip in the original Eee PC or the Intel Atom CPU that Asus will include in the upcoming Eee PC 901.

While Red Fox hasn’t announced a price for the Wizbook800, I’m guessing it’ll be quite a bit cheaper than a top of the line Eee PC though. At least, I’d hope so, based on these specs:
  • CPU: AMD LX700 400MHz
  • OS: Linux
  • Display: 8 inch 800 x 480 pixels
  • Storage:20GB HDD
  • RAM: 512MB
  • Connectivity: Ethernet, 802.11b/g, PCMCIA slot, SD/MMC/MS card reader, 2 USB slots
  • Stereo speakers
  • Microphone input
  • Battery: 2200mAh 2.5 hour battery
  • Dimensions: 250×188x36mm
  • Weight: less than 1.2kg
