Medion Akoya shows up at Computex

German computer maker Medion has its upcoming low-cost mini-notebook on display at Computex. The company announced the Medion Akoya Mini back in April, but now we have a few more details, thanks to TweakTown:

  • CPU: 1.6GHz Intel Atom prcoessor
  • RAM: 1GB DDR2-667
  • Storage: 80GB SSD!
  • Display: 10.2 inch 1024 x 600 pixel screen
  • OS: Windows XP
  • Communication: Ethernet and 802.11n
  • Ports: 3 USB 2.0, flash card reader
  • Webcam: 1.2MP
  • Battery: 3 cell
  • Weight: About 1 kg

No word on pricing, but if that 80GB solid state disk isn’t a typo, the Medion Akoya will probably cost a few bucks more than similar laptops like the Asus Eee PC 1000H or the MSI Wind, which both include hard drives instead of solid state disks.

Medion Akoya gets an 80GB hard drive and 399€ price tag

Medion has released a few more details about its upcoming Akoya laptop. But just a few. French site Blogeee reports that the Medion Akoya will cost 399 Euros, will sport a “latest generation” processor which we assume means Intel Atom, and will have 1GB of RAM, an 80GB hard drive, and a “stable operating system,” which we assume means Linux.

One more tidbit. The press release says this laptop will have an 802.11n adaptor — which seems highly unlikely in a low-cost laptop. On the one hand, 802.11n connectivity would certainly set the Medion Akoya apart from other low-cost ultraportable notebooks. On the other hand, that’s because 802.11n components cost more than 802.11b/g parts. No word on when this laptop will be available, but it’s safe to say it won’t be hitting shelves before June.

Medion Akoya Mini: A Mini-Note killer?

Medion is the latest company to announces a low-cost ultraportable that will take on the Eee PC. But looking at the Medion Akoya Mini’s sleek casing, it’s hard not to compare this computer with the more professional looking HP Mini-Note.

The computer will feature a 10 inch screen, an Intel Atom CPU running at 1.6 or 1.8GHz, at least 1GB of RAM, and a conventional 1.8 inch hard drive. The Akoya Mini will also ship with a Linux operating system, although it’s not clear which distro Medion will be using. You’ll also get a VGA output, a 1.3MP webcam, 2 USB ports, and a memory slot.

The Medion Akoya Mini is due out this summer in Europe for €399 or about $640 US, although there’s no word on whether the notebook will be available stateside.
