A closer look at Linux4one for the Acer Aspire One – Video

linux4one-rc2Linux4one is a custom Linux distribution based on Ubuntu and built specifically for the Acer Aspire One netbook. The first version of the OS was only available in Italian, but Release Candidate 2 is now available with English localization.

Linux4one RC2 features the Ubuntu Netbook Remix interface for small screen laptops like the Aspire One. It also has a custom kernel built to support the Aspire One’s hardware. Most hardware should work out of the box, including the SD card slot, microphone, and WiFi.

One of the most significant updates since RC1 is the availability of a localized version of Linux4one in English. The first version of the OS was only available in Italian. The operating system is based on Ubuntu 8.04, which is the latest Long Term Support version of Ubuntu, but not the latest version of Ubuntu.

The operating system also comes with a handful of applications preloaded, including Flash 10, OpenOffice.org 3.0, and the VLC media player. Most of these apps are available from the Ubuntu repositories, but it’s nice to have them built in. Of course, if you’d rather remove or replace them, you can always uninstall these programs using the Synaptic Package Manager.

You can check out a video of Linux4one RC2 after the break.

Linux4one English version coming soon for Acer Aspire One

Linux4one is a custom Linux distribution designed for the Acer Aspire One netbook. It’s sort of like Ubuntu Eee or Eeebuntu for the Asus Eee PC. But when we first looked at Linux4one the other day, there was one major problem: It was only available in Italian.

Now the developers say they plan to release an updated version with English localization features by Tuesday.

Of course, you can install the standard version of Ubuntu on an Aspire One by yourself, but then you’ll need to apply a bunch of tweaks to get all of the hardware and software to work properly. Linux4one takes away all the guesswork and leaves you with a system running Ubuntu and the Ubuntu Netbok Remix program launcher with support for the WiFi, webcam, and other hardware.

The OS is based on Ubuntu 8.04 and there are no plans to update to the newer Ubuntu 8.10 release anytime soon, which makes some sense since Ubuntu 8.04 is what Ubuntu’s development team calls a “long term support” or LTS release.

Linux4one: Ubuntu for the Acer Aspire One

linux4one

The Acer Aspire One Laptop comes with a choice of Windows XP or Linpus Linux Lite. The custom Linux distro is designed to be easy to use and resembles the Xandros Linux “easy mode” software that Asus ships with some Eee PC models. But while the software makes it easy to find and launch applications with minimal effort, it’s a bit trickier to download and install new applications.

Enter Linux4one. This custom Linux distribution is based on Ubuntu, but it’s tweaked to support the Acer Aspire One’s hardware. Linux4one also uses the Ubuntu Netbook Remix interface which, like Linpus Linux Lite, provides you with large icons for frequently used programs and separate tabs for categories like Internet, Administration, and Favorites. Best of all, since Linux4one is based on the popular Ubuntu Linux operating system, there are thousands of open source applications that will run on the OS.
