Lenovo IdeaPad S10: The next BIG thing in little laptops

Alright, so you’ve already seen pictures of the upcoming Lenovo IdeaPad S10. You’ve even seen it in video. But here’s something you probably hadn’t seen yet: an actual person holding the laptop and showing just how much laptop you can get for $399 to $449. Now that CNet Taiwan has snapped some pictures of real live people next to the S10 we can draw one of two conclusions: Either that laptop is quite a bit bigger than most netbooks, or people in Taiwan are really short. The truth might be somehwere in the middle.

One thing that is worth noting is that Lenovo seems to be snubbing the current trend of making the laptop substantially thinner near the trackpad than near the hinge. The S10 is certainly a little wider in the back than the front. But just a little bit. So the computer looks a little thicker than most of its competitors, although it might not actually be much thicker.

It also has a ten inch screen and 85% sized keyboard, which makes it a bit wider than some laptops in the netbook class.

CNet also has a bunch of close-up pictures showing the S10 from all angles. Overall the build quality looks excellent. There’s plenty of ventilation on the bottom of ht eunit, qhich should hopefully help keep it from getting too hot. There’s also an access panel, which I assume can be opened to replace or upgrade RAM.

There are a couple of shortcut keys just above the keyboard, including a power button, a wireless toggle button and a button that CNET calls “one-click System Restore.” I’m a little scared of that description. Hopefully this feature only works if you press it while booting and then click yes to a few dozen warning messages. Or perhaps Google Translate is just doing a bad job and this isn’t a system restore button at all. Any Chinese speakers want to clear that up for me?

More info on the Lenovo IdeaPad S10

There’s a bit more info about the upcoming Lenovo IdeaPad S10 netbook. Laptop Magazine has a ton of details and a ton of pictures. First up, the operating system: Lenovo plans to ship the computer with Windows XP in the US, but the company will make a version with Linpus Linux Lite available elsewhere. Second, we now have dimensions and weight: 9.8 x 7.2 x .81 ~ 1.08 inches and 2.4 pounds. In other words, it’s a bit thicker than it looks in the video we saw yesterday, but still pretty tiny by laptop standards.

The 10 inch screen will display 1024 x 600 pixels, which is pretty much par for the course these days. The computer will also support 802.11b/g and Bluetooth, has an Ethernet jack, Express card, 1.3MP webcam, 2 USB ports, and a 4-in-1 card reader. I have no idea why Lenovo couldn’t slap an extra USB port on there. The HP Mini-Note also has just two, and I have to say, sometimes two just ain’t enough. It’s hard to call a computer ultraportable if you have to carry around a USB hub.

So here’s the complete rundown for those who like their specs in bullet point form:

  • CPU: 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor
  • Display: 10 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel screen
  • RAM: 512MB or 1GB
  • Storage: 80GB or 160GB hard drive
  • OS: Windows XP or Linpus Linux Lite
  • Connectivity: Ethernet, 802.11b/g, Bluetooth
  • Expansion: 2 USB ports, 4-in-1 card reader, Express card slot,VGA output
  • Dimensions: 9.8 x 7.2 x .81 ~ 1.08 inches
  • Weight: 2.4 pounds
  • Price: $399 to $449

While we’d originally heard that Lenovo would be putting out a 10 inch and 8.9 inch model, it looks like only the 10 inch version will be available in the west. Laptop Magazin reports the smaller computer will be sold in Mexico, India, and parts of Asia and Europe. The S10 will be available in the US on September 28th, but should hit China on September 5th and other parts of Asia on September 10th.

Lenovo S10 mini-notebook gets all official like

Lenovo is finally ready to talk about its upcoming netbook. The company will soon be releasing a 10 inch laptop called the S10. According to Laptop Magazine, there will be two versions available at launch. The cheaper model will cost just $399 and will come wih 512MB of RAM and an 80GB hard drive. Or for just $50 more you can get 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive.

The keyboard is described as 85 percent the size of a typical laptop keyboard, which should make typing bearable if not necessarily fun. And the S10 trackpad supports those multi-touch features which seems to be all the rage these days.

The S10 should hit the streets in late September, possibly earlier in some parts of the world.

Update: We’ve got more details and some official product images.
