HP Pavilion DM1 dual-core netbook reviewed

hp-pavilion-dm1-f

Somewhere in the space between Atom netbooks and full-blown laptops, there’s a space for the HP Pavilion DM1. With an Intel SU2300 dual core CPU under the hood, this ultrathin is powerful enough to compete with chunkier notebooks while thin and light enough to feel like a netbook.

Netbooked has gotten their hands on one, and bottom line is that the DM1 is a decent machine and competitive with other 11.6” models available like the Acer Aspire 1410 and Lenovo U150.

Out-of-the-box, the dual-core SU2300 was able to handle 720p video on YouTube, though 1080p playback was only possible with an upgrade to Flash Player 10.1.

Battery life from the 6-cell lithium ion powerpack was decent at about 4 hours and 20 minutes under normal use and 3 hours and 13 minutes watching a looped 1080p video.

In the review, the DM1 loses points for its keyboard. While offering a solid feel and good tactile response, the overall size is more what you’d expect to find on a 10” netbook. Hey, I generally love the keyboards on HP’s netbooks, but the extra width on its deck feels like a missed opportunity for something a bit larger.

Netbooked also had a couple of issues with the DM1’s touchpad. Apart from stiff, noisy buttons, it also has no support for gestures. That could be a major disappointment for some users, since plenty of smaller, less expensive models can handle multi-touch.

HP Pavilion DM1 11.6 inch laptop unboxed – Video

dm1 unboxed

The HP Pavilion DM1 is an 11.6 inch laptop with a CULV processor. It’s not available in the US yet, but Peter from Netbooked isn’t in the US, and he managed to get his hands on a Japanese model. He’s posted an unboxing video, which you can check out below.

The version Peter picked up has a dual core 1.2GHz Intel Celeron SU2300 processor, integrated GMA 4500MHD graphics, 2GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, and a 6 cell battery. It has an HDMI port, 3 USB ports, Ethernet, and a 802.11b/g WiFi. For some reason HP decided to go with a single jack for the mic and headphone instead of separate jacks. There will also be a version with a dual core Pentium SU4100 processor and other configuration options may be available soon.

The Pavilion DM1 looks an awful lot like the HP Mini 311 on the outside. They appear to have the same keyboard, touchpad, chassis, and display. But the HP Mini 311 has an Intel Atom processor and NVIDIA ION graphics, and will likely sell for a lower price in most parts of the world.

Now (or soon) shipping

A few items we’ve been tracking for a while are now shipping or available for order for the first time:

The Eee PC T91MT is an updated version of the Eee PC T91 I reviewed this summer. The new version adds multitouch support and Windows 7 Home Premium. It’s been available for pre-order for a few days, but it began shipping this weekend.

The Eee Box EB1501 is the first Eee Box nettop to feature a dual core processor, NVIDIA ION graphics, and a DVD burner. It’s now available for order in the UK. No word on a US release date yet.

The HP Pavilion DM1 is the first 11.6 inch laptop from HP with a CULV processor. It won’t begin shipping for another few weeks, but you can now pre-order this laptop in the UK. We’re still waiting for a US launch.

HP Pavilion DM1 launches in Europe

hp pavilion dm1

The HP Pavilion DM1 may not be available in the US yet… but it’s getting a little closer. A few weeks ago it showed up on HP’s Japanese web site. And now the 11.6 inch laptop is available in Germany for 499 Euros. We’re just an ocean or two away from seeing it in North America.

The laptop features an 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display and looks an awful lot like the HP Mini 311 on the outside. But on the inside, HP has replaced the Intel Atom processor and NVIDIA ION graphics with a 1.2GHz Intel Celeron SU2300 dual core processor and Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics. The HP Pavilion DM1 also has 2GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive and runs Windows 7 Home Premium.

The notebook packs 802.11b/g WiFi, a 5-in-1 card reader, Ethernet,  and a 6 cell battery. It weighs 3.2 pounds and measures 11.4″ x 8″ x 1.2″.

HP Japan gets all official with the Pavilion DM1

hp dm1

HP Japan has taken the wraps off of the Pavilion DM1, an 11.6 inch laptop with an Intel CULV processor. A few weeks ago we saw some leaked info about this model, but now it looks like it’s set to go on sale in Japan this Noember for about 70,000 yen or around $780 US. Keep in mind, computers tend to cost more in Japan than they do in the US.

The HP Pavilion DM1 has a dual core 1.2GHz Intel Celeron SU2300 processor, GMA 4500MHD graphics an 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display, 2GB to 5GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drie, 802.11b/g WiFi, HDMI, VGA, Ethernet and 2 USB ports, and a 6 cell, 55Whr battery that should run for up to 8 hours. It will weigh 3.3 pounds and ship with Windows 7 Home Premium.

HP working on an 11.6 inch CULV laptop

hp dv1

A few weeks ago HP announced that the successor to its 12.1 inch Pavilion DV2 laptop with AMD Neo graphics would be a 13.3 inch model called the Pavilon DM3 with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 10 hour battery. And while that all sounds very exciting, I was a bit disappointed to see this product category creeping toward larger and larger machines. Which is why I’m kind of excited about the news that HP is also apparently working on an 11.6 inch machine called the Pavilion dm1 which will have an Intel ULV processor and up to 9 hours of battery life.

The folks at Engadget got their hands on an early edition of HP’s upcoming product catalog and it mentions three as-yet unannounced models including the dm1. The others include the Pavilion dv3 with a 13.3 inch multitouch display ant HPs TouchSmart software and the Pavilion dv8 with an 18.4 inch display.

But I’m most interested in the dm1 portable. It has an 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display, up to 5GB of DDR3 1066 RAM, and 500Gb of hard disk space. It has a 92% full sized keyboard (which looks like the same keyboard found on the HP Mini 311, and optional discrete graphics.

No word on pricing or availability yet, but it’s a safe bet that the dm1 won’t be available until after Windows 7 is released in late October.
