You know that netbook from graphics card maker HIS that was first spotted a few weeks ago? Yeah, it turns out it’s a fake. Or rather, it may be a real netbook, but it wasn’t produced by HIS.

The Register reports that HIS has no plans to enter the netbook market and will be seeking legal action against the folks who decided to slap their name onto a mini-laptop that bears a striking resemblance to an MSI Wind netbook. The computer was supposed to be sold in India for the equivalent of about $400 US. No word on whether the machine ever actually made it to market.

Update: It looks like this is a fake. HIS says it’s not behind this netbook.

It’s not just big name companies like HP, Acer, Dell, Lenovo, and Toshiba who are jumping on the netbook bandwagon. Sometimes it seems like practically any company that’s ever put out a consumer electronics product is working on or has already released a netbook. Today’s entry comes from graphics card maker HIS.

The company unveiled a new netbook in Mumbai, India recently. It looks a lot like an MSI WInd, but I’m going to refrain from calling this another rebranded Wind because it has a few telltale differences, including fewer status LEDs. 

On the inside, the HIS netbook looks a lot like most other mini-laptops on the market today. It has a 10.2 inch 1024 x  600 pixel display, a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 2.5″ HDD, WiFi, Ethernet, a 4-in-1 card reader, 3 USB ports, VGA output, and a 0.3 MP camera. It comes with a 4 cell battery and runs  Windows XP.

Bluetooth and a higher resolution camera are available as options, and the company plans to offer another netbook with HSDPA/WCDMA 3G wireless capability in the future. The netbook will sell for about 20,000 Indian Rupees or $404 US.
