First look at the Eee PC 904

The Asus Eee PC 904 is basically a cross between an Eee PC 900 and an Eee PC 1000HD. It has the same large case and keyboard as the 1000HD, but the smaller display and slower CPU as the Eee PC 900. Julian Prokaza at Mobile Computer Magazine managed to get his hands on a preproduction unit and shot the first look video you can see above.

Here’s what you get for £269 or about $537:

  • 900MHz Intel Celeron CPU
  • 8.9 inch 1024 x 600 pixel display
  • 80GB hard drive
  • 6600mAh battery

Everything else is pretty standard. The computer has a few USB ports, 802.11b/g WiFi, a webcam, and audio inputs and outputs.

Asus announces Eee PC 1000HD, 904HD

eee pc 904hd Asus has decided to throw its naming conventions to the wind and launch two new Eee PC models with rather nonsensical names. The Eee PC 1000HD is pretty much just like the Eee PC 1000H, but instead of an Intel Atom CPU, it features an Intel Pentium M Dothan CPU running at 900MHz.

In other words, you get a 10 inch screen, 80GB hard drive, 1.3MB camera, 6 cell battery, and Pentium processor. I suppose it’s possible that the H stands for hard drive, since the Eee PC also has one of those, and that the D could stand for Dothan.

But then Asus goes and names another new model the Eee PC 904HD. And while that model has a 9 inch display and a hard drive, as you’d expect from the name, it features a 900MHz Intel Celeron CPU. I’m so confused!

In all other respects, the Eee PC 904HD looks like a cross between the Eee PC 901 and the Eee PC 1000HD. It has the case stylings of the 901, but has an 80GB hard drive, 0.3MP camera, and a 6 cell battery.

For anyone keeping track, that brings the Asus model number lineup to 10. If you can’t quite recall the differences between the 701 2G Surf, 701 4G, 701 4G Surf, 701 8G, 900, 901, 904HD, 1000, 1000H, and 1000HD, you can find each item listed on the official Asus products page.

Asus confirms UK pricing for the Eee PC 901, 904, and 1000

Asus has let loose with the UK pricing for its latest Eee PC models, and overall the prices don’t look that different from the US versions. The 901 will set you back £299 or about $592 US, while the 904 will run £269 or about $533 US. The Eee PC 1000H (with an 80GB hard drive) will retail for £349 or about $691, while the Eee PC 1000 (with a 40GB SSD) is priced at £369 or about $731.

These prices include VAT, which explains why they may be a bit higher than the US versions in some cases.

Asus has also posted a handy little comparison chart that shows how the various Eee PC models stack up against one another.

Asus Eee PC 904 gets official

Asus has officially confirmed what everybody already knew: the company will be releasing a new Eee PC model that has the screen of an Eee PC 900 and the body of an Eee PC 1000. In other words, you get a nice roomy(ish) keyboard but a cheaper 8.9 inch 1024 x 600 pixel display instead of the 10.2 inch display that comes with the 1000 series.

The 904 will sell for £269 or about $533, and should be out in mid-July. The PC will not include the fancypants new Intel Atom CPU, but will instead feature the older 900MHz Celeron M chip currently used in the Eee PC 900 and 701 series.

Here’s a rundown of the specs:

  • Operating System: Windows XP
  • Display: 8.9 inch 1024 x 600 pixel
  • Storage: 80GB HDD
  • RAM: 1GB
  • Weight: 1.4kg / 3.1lb

Asus to release new eee PC models with larger keyboards?

Woke up this morning to the news that Asus will soon be pushing out two more Eee PC models. Word on the street (and by street, I mean DigiTimes and Blogeee) is that the new units will feature larger keyboards.

According to DigiTimes, the new computers will be called the Eee PC 904 and 905, and will feature an 8.9 inch display in the same chassis currently used by the company’s 10.2 inch model. In other words, you get a larger keyboard, but you also get a large bezel around the screen. The idea is that Asus will be able to sell the Eee PC 904 and 905 for about the same price as the exisitng Eee PC 901, but you get an easier to use keyboard for your money.

If this is true, what you’d get is a computer with an 8.9 inch 1024 x 600 pixel display, 1GB of RAM, 12GB to 20GB of solid state storage, Windows XP or Linux, a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, and a big bezel around the screen. Meanwhile, the MSI Wind will pack the same features, plus an 80GB hard drive and a larger screen (with the same resolution) into a case that’s about the same size. And MSI will charge about $150 less.

DigiTimes suggests that Asus is also considering giving the 901 and 900 a price cut or dropping them altogether when the new models hit the streets.

French site Blogeee has posted some images of one of the new models. Apparently the site got its hands on two sets of pictures, because one photoset is labeled Eee PC 903 while the other says Eee PC 904. The 903 looks a lot like existing models, but the 904 is quite clearly a new unit with a larger bezel around the display. No word on what under the hood changes might exist in the 903, or what differentiates the 905 from the 904.
