Is the Eee PC 901 too slow for OS X?

Eee PC 900 running OS X

Eee PC 900 running OS X

While the Asus Eee PC line only officially supports Linux and Windows, people have been finding ways to load OS X onto the diminutive laptops for ages. But if you care about little things like performance, here’s a tip: You might want to pick up an Eee PC 1000H instead of an Eee PC 901 if you want to run OS X.

MacEee reports that the 901 is just too slow to run the Mac operating system. The problem isn’t with the CPU. The two computers actually have identical processors. Rather, the Eee PC 901’s solid state disk just isn’t fast enough to keep up with the demands OS X places on it. The Eee PC 901 actually has two solid state disks, a 4GB disk for the operating system and a second, larger disk for programs and files. The 4GB disk is pretty zippy, but the secondary disk not so much. And according to MacEee that second drive makes OS X kind of sluggish. OK, that’s an understatement. It reportedly takes 7 minutes to boot OS X on the Eee PC 901.

The solution? Pick up an Eee PC 1000H. It comes with an 80GB hard drive, and happens to be about $50 cheaper than the 901 anyway.

While I would never actually condone installing OS X on unsupported software (which is a violation of Apple’s licensing agreement), you can find a ton of information on how to do it at the Eee PC OS X Project wiki.

Limited edition Eee PC colors hits Korea

Apparently Asus has decided to give its Eee PC computer lineup the collector’s card treatment. The company offers Eee PC models coated in white, black, pink, green, and blue plastic around the world. But now for a limited time only, Korean customers can pick up a pinkish red or green Eee PC with some sort of pattern that looks a bit like spilled paint on the cover. Be the first kid on your block to own one!

The special edition designs will show up on Eee PC 901 and Eee PC 1000H models and should be available on August 22nd in Korea only. And possibly eBay.

Eee PC 1000H price drop: $550 from Newegg

It looks like Asus may be knocking $100 off the price of the Eee PC 1000H. While Amazon is still taking preorders for $650, Newegg is charging just $550. Newegg is also offering 3 day shipping and says the computer is in stock.

I’d say this was just a case of one retailer offering a deal, but Mwave has the Eee PC 1000H listed for $560. Unfortunately, Mwave says the computer isn’t currently in stock yet. But hey, two makes a trend. Or something.

The Eee PC 1000H has a 10 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM and an 80GB hard drive. It comes with Windows XP and a 6 cell battery. In other words, you get everything you’d find in an MSI Wind notebook, plus a higher capacity battery. Currently the MSI Wind ships with a 3 cell battery.

At $479, the MSI Wind is still cheaper than the Asus Eee PC 1000H. But if you have your heart set on an Asus product (or a higher capacity battery), this price cut certainly looks like good news.

Amazon starts taking Eee PC 901/1000/1000H preorders

Amazon has started to accept preorders for the Asus Eee PC 901, 1000, and 1000H. Asus has said the computers will begin shipping in the US on July 8th.

Amazon is charging $699 for the Eee PC 1000 with an 40GB SSD, 10.2 inch display, and Linux. You can pick up an Eee PC 1000H for $649 with an 80GB hard drive, 10.2 inch display and Windows XP. Or for $599 you can grab an Eee PC 901 with an 8.9 inch display and Windows XP or Linux. The XP version sports a 12GB SSD, while you can get a 20GB Linux model for the same price.

The new computers come in black and white, and you can place an order or search Amazon using the box below. (Disclosure: If you place an order through the search box, I’ll get a small finder’s fee).

Eee PC 901, 1000(H) to hit the US on July 8th

Sure, you can already pick up an Eee PC 901, 1000 or 1000H in Taiwan. And the company’s been projecting a July 1st launch date for the UK for a while now. But up until this evening I hadn’t heard any word on a US release.

But a reader contacted me today and let me know that he had called the Asus pre-sales department on a whim today and asked when the Eee PC 901 would be hitting the US. And without hesitating, the rep told him July 8th. I repeated the experiement and made sure to ask about the Eee PC 1000 and I was told that both models would be available in the US on July 8th.

Now, Asus has been known to miss ship dates before, but it’s seriously looking like the company might be able to beat MSI in getting a 10-inch laptop with a 1024 x 600 resolution screen to market in the US.

On the other hand, Asus will be charging $599 or more for these computers, while the MSI Wind laptop will carry a $479 price tag. The Wind also has a larger keyboard and according to Laptop Magazine gets bettery battery life, which means it might be worth the wait. And who knows? Maybe we’ll be surprised and MSI will actually launch the notebook tomorrow.

thanks Cass!

Update: It looks like the MSI Wind release date has been pushed back to July 7th.

Netbook review roundup: Eee PC 1000H and the Acer Aspire One

PC Magazine has an in-depth look at the Acer Aspire One this week. The magazine gives the little computer high marks for its bright screen, but low marks for its keyboard. The keyboard is a bit larger than the one on an Eee PC 900, but the reviewer says it feels just as cramped.

The Aspire One is at the head of the class when it comes to expandability thanks to its 2 separate memory card readers (one is a dedicated SD card slot that you can use for additional system storage, while the other is a 5-in-1 card reader for transferring files from one computer to another), but comes with less storage than the Eee PC 900/901/1000, the MSI Wind, or the HP Mini-Note. The computer also has a tiny 24Wh hour battery. That’s nearly half the capacity of the 42Wh battery that ships with the Eee PC.

Probably the best part of th ereview is a nifty chart comparing the Aspire One with several other computes. It wins hands down when it comes to price and processor. But Acer is going to have a hard time making the case for the Aspire One once the similarly priced MSI Wind Linux notebook is available.

Elswhere in the mini-laptop world, Laptop Magazine published a complete review of the Eee PC 1000H today. One thing that surprised me was the revelation that the Eee PC 1000H is a bit larger than the MSI Wind Notebook. Both computers hae a 10 inch screen, but the Eee PC is both larger and half a pound heavier at 3.2 pounds. Sure, I probably could have figured those things out by reading the specs, but sometimes you need a real person with real eyes to look at the thing and report how it looks in real life.

Laptop’s Joanna Stern says the display is pretty decent, and she was able watch videos even at an angle. The 1.3 megapixel camera reportedly works well and shoorts smooth video, which is more than I can say for the webcam on my HP Mini-Note.

Stern points out that there’s a user-defineable shortcut key in the quick-launch area, which is always nice to have. There are also buttons for changing screen resolution and switching your processor speed to save power or boost performance.

The computer also boots up quickly (in about 45 seconds), and gets about 4 and a half hours battery life from a 6 cell battery. You can find many more details and a whole bunch of pretty pictures by reading the complete Laptop Magazine review.

Windows Vista on the Eee PC 1000H

The folks at TweakTown didn’t waste much time replacing the Chinese version of Windows XP on their shiny new Eee PC 1000H. Shortly after unboxing the computer, TweakTown installed Windows Vista Ultimate, and the process seems surprisingly easy.
Overall, it takes about 30 minutes to install Windows Vista, and after a fresh install, you get a Windows Vista performance score of 1.0. But that’s almost entirely due to the integrated graphics. The hard drive, memory, and CPU scores are significantly higher. You can use most of the Windows XP drivers included on the Asus support disc to update your system drivers, and grab some Intel 945GME + ICH7-MU chipset drivers from intel and your performance score should go up. TweakTown reports that after applying these updates, the system performance score jumped up to 2.7 and everything worked properly, including the 802.11n networking.
While I would expect Windows Vista to run pretty slowly (it’s not exactly a speed demon on my larger laptop with a Pentium Dual Core CPU), TweakTown says the system performs reasonably well. Hopefully they’ll post some additional videos soon showing boot times, program startup times, and perhaps a few benchmarks.

Asus Eee PC 1000H unboxing video

As I reported earlier this week, the Asus Eee PC 1000 and Eee PC 1000H are now on sale in Taiwan. So the folks over at TweakTown wandered over to a store and picked themselves up an Eee PC 1000H and shot a little unboxing video.
As you can see in the video, the Taiwanese version comes with a localized version of Windows XP. In other words, many of the menus and text areas are in Chinese, which isn’t surprising. But like earlier versions of the Eee PC, Asus includes a Windows XP driver disc in the box, even if you buy a version running Windows XP. That means you can easily install an English version of Windows yourself if you’re so inclined. It may also be possible to change the language manually, but I’ve never tried doing that myself. If you’ve got any tips for converting a Chinese version of Windows to an English version, let us know in the comments.
Aside from the PC and the driver disc, here’s what’s in the box:
  • Slip case
  • Manual (in Chinese)
  • Battery
  • Power cord and adapter
  • LCD cleaning cloth
TweakTown also confirms that the Eee PC 1000H is running Windows XP SP3.

Asus announces pricing, some release dates for the Eee PC 901, 1000

Asus is releasing some more details about the upcoming Eee PC 901, Eee PC 1000, and Eee PC 1000H. When the company unveiled the machines at Computex last week, we got a look at the Taiwanese prices, which ranged from the equivalent of $559 to $658 USD. But it looks like it will cost a few bucks more to pick up an Eee PC in the US or UK.

Laptop Magazine got an official US price for the Eee PC 901, and estimated prices for the Eee PC 1000 Series:

  • Eee PC 901: $599
  • Eee PC 1000H (Windows XP with an 80GB HDD): $699
  • Eee PC 1000 (Windows XP or Linux with a 40GB SSD): $649

There’s still no word on when these computers will drop in the US, but we’ll probably see at least the Eee PC 901 start showing up by the end of June or beginning of July.

It looks like Asus has already announced a firm release date for the UK: July 1st. PC Advisor reports that the Eee PC will cost £319 in the UK, while pricing hasn’t been announced for the Eee PC 1000 series yet.

Asus Eee PC 1000H now available in Taiwan

While Asus hasn’t issued a US or European release dates for the 10-inch Eee PC 1000H yet, it looks like you can already pick one up in Taiwan. Fudzilla noticed that PCHome, a Taiwanese shopping portal is selling the computer for NT $18,988, or about $625 USD (€403).

The news shouldn’t come as a surprise, since several folks have already reported that you can buy an Eee PC 901 in Taiwan. The Eee PC 1000H is basically the same machine, but it has a larger screen and an 80GB hard drive instead of a solid state disk.

The new Eee PC models: A comparison chart

Still confused about the differences between the Eee PC 901, Eee PC 1000 and Eee PC 1000H? Asus has posted a handy little comparison chart showing how the three models stack up against one another. If the image above is hard to read you can check out the original at the Asus news site.

For the most part, the computers are identical except for size, weight, operating system and the amount and type of storage they use. And of course price. But while Asus has released the initial pricing for Taiwan, I’ve learned not to pay too much attention to the Taiwanese prices, as Asus tends to have different prices for its computers in different markets. I’m willing to bet these computers will cost a bit more in Europe than in Taiwan, while the US pricing will be similar or lower to the Taiwanese pricing.

Eee PC 901/1000/1000H get official, colorful

Asus has finally launched its new line of Eee PC computers. I say finally, because over the past few weeks we’ve learned so much about the Eee PC 901 and Eee PC 1000 that I didn’t think there were many surprises left. But Asus did still have a few tricks up their sleeves.

First, the new computers will come in an assortment of colors, including those you can see above. According to Laptop Magazine, the colors are described as Sakura, Sweet Pea, Urban metropolis, White Peony, Pearl White, and Fine Ebony.

As expected, the Eee PC 901 will be be nearly identical to the Eee PC 900, but features a redesigned case and a shiny new Intel Atom CPU, which Asus says will help the computer achieve 7.5 hours of battery life using a 6600mAh battery. Just like the Eee PC 900, the 901 will come in two varieties. One version will come with Windows XP and a 12GB SSD, while the Linux version will have a roomier 20GB SSD.

The Eee PC 1000 will have a 10 inch display and come in two distinct models, the Eee PC 100 and the Eee PC 1000H. The Eee PC 1000 has a 40GB solid state disk, an Intel Atom CPU, 802.11n, Bluetooth, and up to 2GB of RAM. It also weighs 1.33 kg or about 2.9 pounds, which is a bit heavier than earlier Eee PC models. but it also has a nearly full sized keyboard.

The Eee PC 1000H is the Windows model, which comes with an 80GB hard drive instead of a 40GB solid state disk. It also weighs a bit more than its Linux sibling, at 1.45kg or 3.2 pounds.

Engadget has the Taiwanese prices:

  • Eee PC 901: NT$ 16,988 or about $559 US
  • Eee PC 1000H: NT$18,988 or about $625 US
  • Eee PC 1000: NT$19,998 or about $658 US

It’s kind of funny to see the Linux version of the Eee PC 1000 cost more than the Windows version, but those solid state disks don’t come cheap. And I’m pretty happy to see that the Eee PC 901 will sell for about the same price as the existing Eee PC 900, despite early rumors to the contrary. There’s no word on US pricing yet, but Laptop Magazine reports that the computers should be available in the US in July.

You can find more info in the official Asus press release.
