Acer takes lead in price wars: $399 for a 6 cell netbook

If you want an Asus Eee PC 1000H or an MSI Wind with a 6 cell battery, you’ll have to pony up about $550. For about $400 you can get a Lenovo IdeaPad S10, but it’ll ship with a 3 cell battery. And that means that Acer is the first PC maker to offer a netbook with a 6 cell battery, 8.9 inch display and 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU for under $400.

Amazon is taking orders for the Aspire One for $399.95. This version also ships with a 160GB HDD and Windows XP, which means you won’t be saddled with the slow SSD that plagues the Linux version of the Aspire One.

Eee PC 701 keeps getting cheaper, now under $300

UK retailer Expansys has slashed the price on the Eee PC 4G 701 to £158.99 or just under $300 US. While the original Eee PC with its Celeron processor and 7 inch, 800 x 480 pixel display seems antiquated less than a year after it’s release, it’s still one of the most portable machines you’re likely to find for $300 or less.

When Asus first announced plans to release a low cost ultraportable, the company made the mistake of mentioning a possible $200 price tag. We still haven’t gotten there yet, but it looks like we’re one step closer.

On the other hand, Dell is expected to release its Inspiron 910 with an Intel Atom CPU and 8.9 inch display this week. And rumor has it the cheapest model will be just $299, which means you could get a much more capable machine for your $300 than an Eee PC 701. Unless the rumors are wrong and Dell will tack a higher price tag on the Inspiron Mini.

Acer cuts Aspire One prices… by a lot

Acer has announced some serious price cuts for its Aspire One laptop series. Like $50 price cuts. Here’s a rundown of the new pricing structure:

  • Aspire One AOA110-1722 with Linpus Linux Lite, 8GB SSD, and 3 cell battery - $329 (was $379)
  • Aspire One AOA150-1570 with Windows XP, 120GB HDD, and 3 cell battery - $349 (was $399)
  • Aspire One AOA150-1447 with Windows XP, 160GB HDD and 6 cell battery - $399 (new)

Why slash prices on a PC that’s only been out a few months? I don’t know, but I’m sure it doesn’t have anything to do with a $299 coming soon from Dell…

I checked a few online shops and the new prices don’t seem to be widely in effect yet. But hopefully we’ll see updated listings shortly.

Pick up an Eee PC 4G 701 for just $299 from Geeks

Geeks.com is selling the Eee PC 4G 701 for just $299. This computer sold for $399 when Asus first introduced it less than a year ago. But since launching the Eee PC 701, Asus has put out over a dozen new Eee PC units, which has helped drived down the cost on the mini-notebook that started it all.

The Eee PC 4G 701 has a 7 inch, 800 x 480 pixel display, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of flash storage. It doesn’t have the roomier keyboard or screen you’ll find on newer Eee PC models. But if you can’t justify spending more than $300 on a netbook (and can’t wait a few days or weeks for Dell to launch a $299 laptop with an 8.9 inch display), this computer might be worth a look.

Sylvania G Netbook price slashed to $299

Wal-Mart has been selling the Everex Cloudbook for $299 for a few weeks now. And that’s made the $399 - $449 Sylvania G Netbook look horribly overpriced, because the G is basically just a rebranded version of the Cloudbook 1200V. But now it looks like Sylvania is catching up with the big W, because today you can pick up a Sylvania G Netbook for about $299 from several retailers, including Amazon and J&R.

The Sylvania G Netbook features a 1.2GHz VIA C7-M CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 30GB hard drive, a 7-inch, 800 x 480 pixel display, a webcam, WiFi, and a 4-in-1 card reader. It’s not exactly going to challenge the Eee PC 1000 in terms of performance anytime son. But for $299, it’s not a bad little machine. If you can deal with the gOS Linux operating system.

Amazon offering $100 Eee PC 900 rebates

Want to pick up a new Asus Eee PC, but don’t want to spend upward of $500 to get a model with a 9 inch display? If you can live without the new power saving Intel Atom CPU, Amazon’s got a deal for you. The company is offering $100 rebates on several Eee PC 900 models. This brings the price of the Eee PC 900 down to about $440 or $450 after rebate, depending on which version you buy.

The Eee PC 900 has an 8.9 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, a 900MHz Intel Celeron CPU, and 1GB of RAM. The computer comes with either a 12GB SSD and Windows XP or a 20GB SSD and Linux. And the PC is available in black or white.

Walmart drops Everex Cloudbook price to $299

Just over two months after dropping the price of the Everex Cloudbook from $399 to $349, Walmart has given the little computer that barely could another price cut. Now you can pick up at Cloudbook for $299.

At $399, there was really little reason to choose a Cloudbook over an Eee PC 4G or other similarly priced computers. Sure, the Cloudbook has a 30GB hard drive which is more storage space than you’ll find on most low-end ultraportable laptops. But it also has a difficult to use touchpad and the hardware and operating system don’t really seem to be designed to play well together.

But for $299, things start to look a bit different. The only other machine you could pick up for that price would be an Eee PC 2G Surf which has just 2GB of storage and a lower capacity battery (or a Alpha 400/Razorbook 400 which is really in a class all its own).

In addition to a 30GB hard drive, the Cloudbook has a 1.2GHz VIA C7-M CPU, 512MB or RAM, 802.11b/g WiFi, a 4-in-1 card reader, and the gOS operating system, which is based on Ubuntu Linux.

“World’s Cheapest Laptop” is just $130 — if you order in bulk

While the OLPC XO Laptop never really hit that mythical $100 price point, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to sell a laptop for little more than a Ben Franklin. Alibaba is selling the so-called “World’s Cheapest Laptop,” for just $130. The only catch? You need to order 50 or more laptops to get that price.

The laptop is basically a rebranded Razorbook 400/Skytone Alpha 400. That means you get all the usual goodies (or not so goodies, as the case may be), including a 400MHz CPU, 7 inch 800 x 480 pixel display, 128MB of RAM, 1GB of flash memory, and a simple Linux-based OS that’s notoriously difficult to fiddle with.

The PC also comes with an SD card slot, 3 USB ports, an onboard mic, and a VGA port. There are also optional LAN and WiFi dongles for hooking up to the internets.

Eee PC 1000H price drop: $550 from Newegg

It looks like Asus may be knocking $100 off the price of the Eee PC 1000H. While Amazon is still taking preorders for $650, Newegg is charging just $550. Newegg is also offering 3 day shipping and says the computer is in stock.

I’d say this was just a case of one retailer offering a deal, but Mwave has the Eee PC 1000H listed for $560. Unfortunately, Mwave says the computer isn’t currently in stock yet. But hey, two makes a trend. Or something.

The Eee PC 1000H has a 10 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM and an 80GB hard drive. It comes with Windows XP and a 6 cell battery. In other words, you get everything you’d find in an MSI Wind notebook, plus a higher capacity battery. Currently the MSI Wind ships with a 3 cell battery.

At $479, the MSI Wind is still cheaper than the Asus Eee PC 1000H. But if you have your heart set on an Asus product (or a higher capacity battery), this price cut certainly looks like good news.

Asus offers $100 rebate on Eee PC 900, brings price down to $449

Want a tiny laptop with an 8.9 inch 1024 x 600 pixel display and don’t care if it packs a 900MHz Intel Celeron CPU instead of a shiny new Intel Atom CPU? Asus is apparently hoping to move some of its Eee PC 900 inventory while at the same time differentiating the lower end PC from the newer Eee PC 901 model. The company is offering a $100 rebate to customers who purchase an Eee PC 900 between today and July 31st from participating retailers.
Right now it looks like you can get the rebate through Amazon and ZaReason. Or you can download the rebate form directly from ZaReason (PDF link). If you find any other participating sites, let us know in the comments.
With the Eee PC 901 selling for $599, a $449 Eee PC 900 looks like a pretty good deal. The “older” model has only been available for a few months. And while it doesn’t have a multi-touch trackpad or power-saving Intel Atom CPU, it closely resembles the Eee PC 901 in size and shape. And the 900MHz CPU is surprisingly zippy when performing basic tasks like editing Office documents or surfing web pages.
thanks Ari!

Cheap, refurbished Eee PCs showing up on Amazon

With the Eee PC 900 set to launch in the US in just a few weeks, it should come as no surprise that the 6-month old Asus Eee PC 701 is getting the refurb/discount treatment. If you’re in the market for an original refurbished 4G unit, you can pick one up from Amazon for as little as $341.29, which is almost $60 off the original price. Amazon’s also got the 4G Surf for as low as $289.65, which is also about $60 off. The Surf is basically the same as the 4G, but lacks the webcam and has a lower capacity battery.

The best deal I’ve found so far for a 2G Surf (which lacks a webcam, has a lower capacity battery, a slower processor and has half the storage of the 4G Surf) is $256.52 for the black model. But if you fish around on Amazon you can also find good deals on white, pink, and green versions.

When Asus first announced the Eee PC, the company mentioned a $200 computer, which got a lot of people’s hopes up. It’s probable that Asus never meant it would sell a computer directly to consumers for that price, but rather that the company would try to make a $200 computer available for bulk purchase to governments and educators. But many people were disappointed when the Eee PC came to market with a $400 price tag. Now it’s finally possible for consumers pick one up for close to the price Asus originally announced.

Thanks John!
