Asus starts outfitting older netbooks with newer chiclet-style keyboards

1000ha chiclet

We already knew that the Asus Eee PC 1000HE chiclet-style keyboard was compatible with older Eee PC 1000 and 1000H models, thanks to the work of some nebtook hackers. But now it looks like Asus has confirmed things by playing a little mix and match with some netbook parts. Netbook News.de spotted a few older Eee PC models including the Eee PC 1000HA and S101H in Taiwan sporting shiny new chiclet-style keyboards.

Now, just because these models are showing up in Taiwan doesn’t mean you’ll be able to find them globally. In fact, Asus has pretty much stopped selling the Eee PC 1000-series in the US altogether. But Netbook News reports that Asus is considering making the keyboard available as an upgrade kit for existing Eee PC owners.

Update: You know, I had a feeling this story sounded familiar. We first reported that Asus was starting to add the chiclet-style keyboard to the Eee PC 1000HA back in April. But the chiclet-style Eee PC S101H is still new, as is the possibility of an upgrade kit, although that last bit still hasn’t been finalized yet.

Asus begins phasing out old netbook keyboard design

1000ha-chiclet2

The Asus Eee PC 1000HE is the first netbook from Asus to use the new “chiclet” style keyboard. But it won’t be the last. At CES in January, I was told that Asus plans to use the new keyboard layout on all of its upcoming netbooks. Apparently that also extends to existing models that are still in production.

Portable Monkey discovered that Asus is now building the Eee PC 1000HA with the new chiclet keyboard. The 1000HA has been around for a few months, and it’s basically identical to the Eee PC 1000H except it doesn’t have 802.11n or Bluetooth. And now it has a newer keyboard design with the shift key on the right side of the keyboard to the left of the up arrow. The keys are also flatter, with more space between keys making it a little easier for touch typists to find the correct keys with their fingers.

Asus Eee PC 1000HA now available at Newegg

More Savings on Some of the Hottest Laptops at Newegg.com

Newegg is on a roll. Yesterday I told you that the online retailer was the first major store to have the Asus N10 laptop in stock while Amazon, J&R and other companies are still taking pre-orders. Now it looks like Newegg may also be the first major company to offer the Asus Eee PC 1000HA.

The Eee PC 1000HA is like a light version of the Eee PC 1000H. Both netbooks have an Intel Atom CPU, a 10.2 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, 1GB of RAM and a 6 cell battery. In fact, the only real difference I can between the 1000HA and the 1000H is that the H includes 802.11n and Bluetooth support while the HA only has an 802.11b/g card.

You may notice that the 1000HA also has a 160GB hard drive. The 1000H originally shipped with an 80GB hard drive, but it looks like Asus has upgraded the hard drive to 160GB for no additional cost. So you can pick up an Asus Eee PC netbook with 802.11n and Bluetooth for $480, or one without it for $430.

Asus Eee PC 1000HA: Just like the 1000H, only less so

Asus is apparently poised to launch yet another laptop in its never-ending line of Eee PC models. The Asus Eee PC 1000HA, now available for preorder at Amazon in black and white versions, looks a lot like the Asus Eee PC 1000H on paper. It’s got a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM, and a 6 cell battery. But it also has twice the storage capacity, thanks to a 160GB hard drive, and costs about $20 less, at just $430.

As you’ve probably guessed, Asus had to cut a few corners to keep the price down. According to the Amazon listing, the Eee PC 1000HA does not have built-in 802.11n or Bluetooth support, both of which are featured in the 1000H. But if those features aren’t important to you, this looks like one heck of a bargain.
