Over the years, RIM has done its fair share of innovating and produced some pretty awesome devices. It’s no secret that they’re working on a tablet, and MobileCrunch is reporting that they’ve now purchased a domain to protect one device name which has been floating around the rumor mill for quite some time. Ready? It’s blackpad.com.

So much for my suggestion that they might use something RIM-esque like “Blackberry XL.” We shouldn’t jump to any conclusions, of course — but RIM may feel a need to follow Apple’s lead. General consensus seems to be that if you’re releasing a tablet device you’d better slap “pad” in the name somewhere.

In fairness, BlackPad might not be the worst buzzword mashup we’ve seen. Wiipad, anyone?

Blackpad sounds like a high tech grandson of BlackBeard the pirate. :)

I agree it could be worse; WiiPad sounds an adult protection for aging nerds and geeks. :)
