Walmart plans to offer a $228 netbook from eMachines on December 26th. The deal will only be available in-stores, and it looks like you’ll get a pretty generic netbook with a 10.1 inch display, 1GB of RAM, Windows 7 Starter Edition, and a 3 cell battery.

The eMachines brand is owned by Acer, which means that this laptop will pretty much the same as a number of similar modes from Acer, Gateway, or Packard Bell. But I have to admit, this is the first time I’ve heard of any netbook bearing the eMachines brand name. And I’m not really sure what Acer and/or Walmart are thinking here. It’s not as if the eMachines label actually lends any credibility to… well, anything. Sure, it sort of signifies cheap, but you know what else does that? A low price.

It looks like this is going to be a doorbuster deal, since Walmart is only expected to carry 10 eMachines EM250-1162 units per store.

Update: For a closer look at the eMachines EM250, you can check out the YouTube video below.

Can't get vga out to tv vga in to work past windows xp set-up screen. My Acer Aspire 5515 works fine. Suggestions?

I am having the same issue. Would love some feedback if you figured out the problem.

bought this at walmart for $228, only had one issue with it, when i got it it would not connect to wifi, had to slide the switch to turn it on, never had to again. plays the original Call of Duty fine. battery life is good. going to upgrade to 2 gigs of ram shortly. People have been complaining about customer service, well that is because emachines is just a name now, so their service went out the window when they were bought out. b4 the buy out Emachines customer service was great, they didn't care that my desktop was out of warranty, they would still help, called them about my mother in-laws desktop last week, and they said its out of warranty so we cant help you, but this netbook is worth the investment i made. use it for school, it is light and small so that helps when my backpack is full of books, and it even works in my programming class.

i have an emachine 250 and love it the 3cell battary last about 3.5 hours surfing the web and running some word doc.s it seems pretty fast for a netbook almost as fast as my gateway laptop i would say for 228 it is a steal and well worth the money
  • AngryMom
Don't expect customer service on this machine. I tried calling 3 times, each time was told to go online. "Chatted" with 5 different people over 2 day period. Each one telling me to do what the previous people told me to do, and the machine still had problems. Finally I was able to get the info so I can sent this piece of junk to Texas to get it "fixed"--I will believe it when I see it. I was told by the last live chat tech that I was causing inconvenience to them. I will never purchase emachines again in my life!

We purchased this machine 1/4/10. Have had problems with it not booting, harddrive is clicking, etc. Tried to take it back to Walmart, but we were outside the 15 day return so they would not take it. Customer service has been rotten. Called and could not get thru the automated junk to find a solution, and it took over an hour and getting online with 3 different "customer service" people from India from the names listed before I was able to get a weblink so I can test out my harddrive. Get a better machine from someone else.

  • Bob Callahan
I have upgraded to 2GB and I like it. It sped up the already fast startup, programs load and start faster and things just run better in general......am VERY glad I upgraded.....
  • Bill
You said you upgraded your eMachines netbook to the 2GB ram. Can I ask how much it cost and where you bought it from? What was the kind of ram the description so I know what to get for mine?

I'm sorry. I am brain dead today. It is not Kensington. It is Kingston. I promise, I won't bother you anymore.

Has anyone tried putting Unbuntu on this? If so, did you have any problems with anything not working after the install? I watched the video link and the guy had a version of linux he could boot to, but didn't say if he had any problems. Thanks.
  • vampyregod
i installed xunbuntu side by side with windows 7. to use the wifi, you have to enable the driver.

the only problem i had was when windows 7 updated, and restarted, it would not start, so i had to insall xunbuntu completely over the windows partition.

all my programs for xunbuntu work and it uses all hardware, including the webcam. they also have unbuntu also has remixed versions of linux that are made specifically for netbooks. i used 9.04 and upgraded to 9.10.

Just a clarification to my last reply. The "CT" number that I mentioned is the Crucial Model Number. The Kensington Model Number is KVR667D2S5/2G

I hope I am not being rude by replying to a question that you asked someone else but here is the description of the memory, 2GB 667 Mhz CT25664AC667 DDR2 200-Pin SODIMM Laptop Memory. The Brand that is in my netbook from the factory is Kensington. Amazon has it for $44.56 plus shipping. They also have Crucial which is $48.84 including shipping. I have been shopping for these a good bit and these are the best deals I have found.

I bought one on New Years Day. I can find no problems with it. I was in my local Wal-Mart yesterday 1/20/2010. They still have 5 of these and they are still $228. So still check your Wal-Mart.
  • Robert Callahan
Purchased one of the Wal-Mart specials.....it doesn't work....won't go online...says no Network Access. I asked if it was ready to go online as is and was told yes...I have access at home to WiFi....what is up here?
  • lovemyjayden
You have 15 days through Wal-Mart to return the item. Take it back and demand a new one. Ours works perfectly and got online immediately.
  • acdc
can you transfer your itunes from your computer to your netbook.. do you just load itunes then connect your ipod?
  • lovemyjayden
I purchased my son's netbook last week and went online and downloaded itunes and then transferred all of my purchases to his computer. That included 6 movies and a ton of his videos. It went very quickly and was easier than I thought. Someone had posted that you had to downloaded a bunch of crap in order to download itunes but I had no trouble just downloading it directly from itunes.com. Computer still works as quickly as it did before I put all of the extras on it. Actually works quicker than my nieces netbook that was an extra $125.00. Oh, but don't chose to sync your ipod immediately. I'm assuming you already know that it will wipe out your music if you don't transfer your purchases first. Good luck with it!
  • Jenna
yes, cuz i'm trying to download itunes right now on it and its not working :(
  • georgewlong
I purchased an eM250 from Wal-Mart just after Christmas in Corpus Christi, TX for $228.00. It is fantastic. Surely you cannot do gaming, 3-D CAD and high end applications (or at least I've not tried to), but for spreadsheets, accounting, word processing, emails, Skype, and IM, it is perfect. The only two 'complaints'...the cover is too highly polished and shows fingerprints easily and the headphone receptical does not 'seat' well...I must leave the plug slightly disengaged to hear my headphones.
Oh, it has a video cam, speakers (weak) and microphone built in, and comes with Windows 7 Starter.
Best deal for the money in a Netbook...WalMart isn't the world's largest retailer by mistake.

bought this netbook 3 days ago. operates just fine. was a little leary of buying it but i'm glad i did. pages load faster than i thought they would. i use mine to mostly play online poker. would definately recommend this netbook. buy the emachines and save $70 as the identical acer. peace out girl scout.
  • EZ
Bought one of these to test. It is the same machine as the 10.1" Acer One. Same everything, same motherboard... Not I find out that Acer purchased eMachines. It makes sense, so it's a good buy. All parts & accessories for the Acer One are interchangeable (6 Cell Battery, ...)
  • Chris
i just bought this netbook today. so far its working great. loads fast downloads rather quickly for the size of ram. overall its a great little netbook. my cousin just bought a dell mini inspiron and we were testin to see whos loaded faster and they were about the same. i would recommend emachines netbook or dell mini to anyone both work great!
  • got one for wife's nephew and one for us. Looks to be an Acer D250 in nearly all regards (they have several variations with CPU, bluetooth, battery size, etc.) It has a 1GB memory module installed which can be swapped for a 2GB module (will probably do that soon), a mini PCI-e slot and a 250GB drive [ST9250315AS] (instead of the common 160GB) but no bluetooth.

The closest Acer D250 config I could find is probably the AOD250-1624 (except the drive for that config is 160 and not 250, and it mentions 'crystalbrite' for the LCD and I'm not sure if the eM250 version has that.) All-in-all, a great deal for $228 (amazon has the AOD250-1624 for +$60 --- and that's with the smaller drive.)

I'm going to try to 'hackint0sh' it, but I wanted a recovery option: download the trial version of 'Virtual CD', create 3 'blank virtual dvds' and then run the 'eMachines Recovery Management' software and let it 'burn' the 2 dvds to 'create factory default disc's, and 'create drivers and applications disc.' I copied those ISOs over to a USB flash stick and now I am ready to go!

This is definitely going to be the "hey! what computer can I use to surf the net/facebook/farmtown/skype since all the other computers are in use???" computer.

Hi Joseph I am worried about the power supply. I called a few computer repair guys and that is the issue with emachines. Can you determine if the power supply is enough?
  • audrey
I bought this netbook on 12/26 and I actually like it. The downside is that it only has 1GB RAM which for some may seem speedy but my laptop has 3GB RAM and I can definitely tell where the netbook is sluggish. I've had no problems with it, I've installed my blackberry software, firefox, itunes, and a couple other programs and performance has not been affected.

My husband liked mine so much he went and bought one for himself. I do plan on replacing my laptop in a couple months so I can use my larger programs like photoshop. This little netbook is great for the simple tasks, I wouldn't expect this to be my everyday computer.
  • mominva
i actually bought this netbook today and so far i think it's pretty nice for the price $228. no problems with the wi-fi or loading times. i called wal-mart about different netbook and this was the only one they had but i'm not disappointed. and it also has windows 7 and a webcam which is nice.
  • bingodiva2
does this emachine netbook come with wifi?
  • Guest
    Yes and it works great.
  • Adam
    Yes.
  • Roger
I have owned eMachines computers for more than a decade, and I think they are great. No issues.
  • Chance_Stevens
Thanks for the shout out! You'll see from the comments on SD that the deal is pretty lukewarm and many people may just hit up Best Buy to get the netbook they'll be selling for $199 (a Lenovo S10E) or spend up and get an Asus/HP for $250 - $280.

    Cheers.
  • Mikez
Be prepared for a name clash here...
I once worked with an "eMachines" - manufacturers of UPS systems.
