Laptop Magazine’s K.T. Bradford and I share an opinion on subsidized netbooks: we’re not big fans. We’re not really what most carriers would consider their target market, though.

Those of you who don’t mind the contract commitment, though, may very well want to consider picking up one of these discounted machines. Hey, if you’re going to commit to a $60 bill for the next 24 months, why not at least get yourself a nice, new netbook while you’re at it?

K.T. has put together a simple cheatsheet which spells out the price of 10 netbooks on various carriers, the total contract cost, and the combined total you’ll be out-of-pocket.

One other thing I found interesting on K.T.’s cheatsheet is that Verizon offers two models with 6-cell batteries direct. If you want that kind of capacity from AT&T, you’ll have to head over to Best Buy.

16 cell battery on the Nokia...really? Oh, I rather doubt that...
  • Check the specs. Nokia does claim the Booklet 3G has a 16-cell battery.

Reading specs is different then understanding specs.

"...The Booklet 3G battery design stems from a Nokia 1000 mAh mobile phone battery. Building around this as a power source, the firm created a slim-line 16-cell removable battery that has been benchmarked at 12 hours usage. However we were told by one of Nokia's design team that it's more realistic to see around 8 to 9.5 hours of actual battery life over an average working day." -The Inquirer - http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/review/1532...

My Samsung NC10 provides five to six hours with 6-cell, so Nokia's fake 16 cell should last longer in most buyers minds. But really you only get the 25% more...so yeah....again I think not.
  • I understand the specs just fine. Just because the 16 cell battery doesn't perform much better than a 6 cell doesn't mean it's not 16 cells. The problem you seem to have is that it doesn't last much longer than your netbook's 6 cell. I know that. Anyone whose read our review knows that. (It got 8:24 on our test.) Not the point. The battery can still be 16 cells.

Remember that cells aren't the only thing that determine a battery's longevity. The original MSI Wind lasted about 5.5 hours, the Samsung N110 lasted above 8, the Toshiba mini NB205 lasted almost 9.5. All 6 cell batteries, but some with different capacities and different drivers and energy saving software behind them.

So I have no trouble grokking a 16 cell battery not lasting much longer than the 6 cell on your NC10. Depends on capacity and drivers. If you want to call Nokia a bunch of liars, you go right ahead. But save the condescension for someone else.
