Toshiba NB205 with Windows 7 Starter

Update: As of October 22nd, many of the notebooks and netbooks listed below are now shipping.

Windows 7 won’t be available to the public until Thursday, October 22nd. But dozens of netbooks and notebooks running the operating system are now available for pre-order.

Some of the restrictions imposed on Windows XP netbooks have been lifted, so in addition to shipping with the latest version of Windows, many of the netbooks have received a spec bump.

There are also a number of more powerful 11 and 12 inch laptops with Intel CULV processors available for pre-order.

Pretty much all of these laptops are scheduled to be available on Thursday, October 22nd, which by some strange coincidence happens to be Windows 7 launch day.

And Amazon’s not the only place where you can pre-order laptops with Windows 7 today. You can also place pre-orders from HP for the Mini 110 with an optional $30 upgrade to Windows 7 Starter. The HP Mini 311 is available with a $50 upgrade option for Windows 7 Home Premium.

Dell is also offering the Inspiron Mini 10v and Dell Inspiron Mini 10 with a Windows 7 Starter upgrade for a $30 premium when you order from Dell.com, although I know some people are going to question whether a switch from Windows XP Home to Windows 7 Starter really qualifies as an “upgrade.” Dell also lets you upgrade the Inspiron 11z to Windows 7 Home Premium for $30 or Windows 7 Professional for $130.

In other news, Amazon Germany is taking pre-orders for the Asus Eee PC T91MT with Windows 7 Home Premium, an 8.9 inch multitouch display, 1.33GHz Intel Atom Z520 processor, and 16GB SSD and 1GB of RAM for 506 Euros (about $754 US).  This model isn’t showing up at any US retailers that I can find yet.

call it upgraade and make (naive, stupid) customers pay more for less (this is win7 starter under all terms, specially in regard of connectivity)

HP has a whole bunch of new ones too, including the new DM3. Sadly, I don't see the AMD Neo and Turion X64 options I had expected. But they are offeriing a 2.26 Ghz option with G 105m graphics. Looks like this one spans the gap from thin and light all the way up to a full-powered compact notebook (competitive with a MacBook Pro 13), depending on how you spec it out.
  • Calvin
Actually, the AMD Neo options are available in the DM3z, including an optional discrete Radeon HD 4330. Like with other models, they have a different suffix (z) for the AMD version instead of the Intel option (DM3t).
  • Great post Brad - just what I was looking for now that I am in the market for a new Win7 netbook. I think I'll go for the HP Mini 311 - I've been waiting for that thing since before it was a sparkle in HP's eye. By the way keep up the great work, I know it can be hard keeping a blog up to date on your own but I think the quality of liliputing is fantastic!

I am hoping to find a consolidated Benchmark list when all these hit the market :) Hint Hint
  • BoloMKXXVIII
I am sure Brad will benchmark them all...just as soon as you send him test machines to benchmark.
  • Well said. :) I am thinking about purchasing a few of the models which I know I'm not going to get from PC vendors anytime soon.

But I do have a limited budget for this sort of thing.
  • BoloMKXXVIII
I can't say I am surprised, but I am dissappointed that all of the netbooks in your list are going to ship with Windows 7, crippled edition. It is really amazing that Dell and HP consider it an upgrade to move from a full featured OS (XP) to a crippled OS (7 starter). I expect to start hearing stories of returns in about a week.
  • Whoops, I forgot to add one... There's an Asus Eee PC 1008HA model that will be available with Windows 7 Home Premium... I'll update the list momentarily.
  • Minor oops: You have Toshiba Satellite T115 listed twice.
  • Nope, two different models with different battery capacities and different
prices. I couldn't spot any other differences between the two models.
  • My bad. Missed the 8.5 vs 9.5 battery life... dang speed reading course letting me down! ;)
  • No worries. I think they each have slightly different model numbers, but
I've abbreviated most of the info on this page to keep it from getting too
    overwhelming.

Thanks Brad for the great list. I think many have been waiting for the 11.6 inch for a long time. Don't see some favourites though like the HP 311 and the Lenovo.

I hope you can integrate your list above to your new 11.6 inch database.

I think 11.6 will replace the 10 inch. Just like how 8.9 inch has died, the 10 inch too will die soon, if not, wither away slowly to make place for the 11.6.
  • The HP Mini 311 is on there. You just have to scroll down to the bottom.
I haven't seen anything from the Lenovo camp yet, but I'm keeping tabs on
    their product line as well.
  • mifa101
Excellent list - really what everyone needed.
PLEASE KEEP IT UPDATED AND BE SURE TO ADD GRAPHIC CARD SPECS-It is very important as more CULV based notebooks start being more competitive than netbooks by adding dedicated graphic card and more decent pricing (I.e Acer Aspire AS1810TG, core 2 duo Su9400 with 512MB ram ATI dedicated card)given the fact that they are fully featured and can handle games and 1080 HD content. Cheaper, lighter, stronger-That's all we need. With W7 let the games/competition begin
  • aroneo
Can't find any mention of the AS1810TG. Is it something that's been announced (or leaked) or just something that would be cool if it existed? It caught my attention because it would basically be everything I want in a light lappy -- little higher specd proc., dedicated graphics with the 11.6" inch form factor. Here's to hoping.

Great summary list. Thanks, Brad. Since I'm not a fan of chiclet keyboards (nix Acer/Asus), and want both VGA (nix Dell 11Z) & HDMI, the Lenovo U350 was the only CULV option I knew of to date. I'll check these others out.

Many of the vendors seem to be changing their initially leaked specs to slightly better CULV processors, or offering multiple processor options. While wikipedia has a nice list of the CULV processors (search for "CULV"), I haven't seen a real-world comparison of them.

    For example:
The Lenovo U350 is available with a SU2700 (Single-Core Pentium 1.3 GHz 2MB L2) or SU3500 processor (Core 2 Solo 1.4 GHz 3 MB L2). Is there much difference running one app? multiple apps?

The Dell 11z is available with a 743 (Single-Core Celeron 1.3GHz 1MB L2) or SU4100 processor (Dual-Core Pentium 1.3GHz 2MB). Is there much difference running one app? multiple apps?

So many choices, so little practical info. Please point me in the right direction - anyone!
  • I'm working on getting my hands on as many computers as I can with some of
these single and dual core CULV processors. Unfortunately it's going to be
hard to get apples to apples comparisons, and I don't expect to get a lot of
demo units of a single model in multiple configurations. So as much as I'd
love to compare a Dell 11z with 2 different processors, I'll probably end up
testing one processor in one computer, and another in a different PC...
c'est la vie de la blogger
  • psydeways
I look forward to to your mixed fruit results. Perhaps if you select a sufficiently simple (& free) speed test protocol we could post our results to liliputing as we get our new toys. I bet a lot of liliputing fans will start with a clean Win7 install anyway.

    Des bloggers ont une vie?
  • Hehe, I'll look into it.
I like real-world tests better than benchmarks, so I usually like to see how
a PC handles when watching online video, movies from the hard drive,
transcoding audio and video files, and the like... but maybe I'll get around
putting together a standard test soon and if I do that I'll consider making
    it available for download.

    Thanks for the suggestion!

Correction: On the DM3z with AMD options is available starting at under $500 (corporate discount). I wish I had waited before buying my HP 5101.
  • michael
It would be good fun to see who is going to buy those US$5000 super light Toshibas, Fujitsu and Sony ultraportables once all these CULV 11.6 machines come out big time.

Who in the right mind would buy a 5000 Toshiba notebook when a 589 Asus UL20A is good enough? (http://www.dynamism.com/#Product=toshiba_rx1)

Many thanks to Asus for starting this netbook revolution 2 years back.
  • Mikez
In case no one noticed, they started another one with the <$100 HD Media Player.
This time, just in time for the Holiday shopping season.
  • If AMD has a cpu that optimised for Win7, why are they not using it in the Win7 computers?

I am glad that Win7 did not make the price go up too much. Low price is the appeal - at least for me - for netbooks.
  • Leah
I think it may take a while before we get completely out of the 1GB RAM-160GB HDD woods; the computer makers are bound to have a lot of those parts sitting around still.
