szmovi p610

The P610 is a pretty accurate-looking copy of the HP Mini 1000. But the laptop instead comes from Szmovi, a manufacturer in Shenzhen, China, where it sells for about $350.

The Szmovi P610 has the usual netbook specs including 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU. The laptop has a 10.1 inch, 1024 x 576 pixel display and the same awkward touchpad as the HP Mini 1000 with the mouse buttons located on the left and right side instead of below the touch area.

Pretty accurate-looking copy? The right-shift key is completely different. The 1000 has a nice large shift in the usual place, while this thing goes the MSI route by moving the shift to the left to make room for the up-arrow. Better than the original Asus, yes, but not my preferred layout...too easy to overreach and jump up a line by mistake...

As for the touchpad, I don't mind the split buttons myself. On a netbook, it's all small enough for your thumb and middle finger to work the buttons while your index finger does the walkin'. It's all in what you get used to. My Acer has one like that and it's never been a problem.

i prefer split buttons. no reason to waste vertical space.
