It looks like Samsung is making its upcoming thin and light laptop with an Intel CULV processor all official-like. Engadget has a gallery of photos of the Samsung X120, which is an upcoming 11.6 inch laptop from Samsung that will reportedly pack a 1.2GHz intel Celeron 723 CPU and integrated GMA 4500 graphics.

In other words, on the inside, this laptop will be a lot like the Dell Inspiron 11z, but without the awkward touchpad. Instead, it will have its own awkward touchpad. For some reason, this is the first Samsung laptop I’ve seen that places the mouse buttons to the left and right sides of the touchpad instead of below it. While this provides more room for the keyboard, it’s an uncomfortable layout at best and it’s something that other netbook makers have been moving away from. I can’t quite understand why Samsung would use a more traditional touchpad layout on its earlier 10 inch netbooks and then go with the buttons-on-the-side layout on this larger model.

In other news, Engadget confirms that the X120 will be about 0.95 inches thick and sport WiFi, Bluetooth, an HDMI output, and 9 hour battery. The X120 will ship for between 699 and 899 Euros and it should be available this month in Europe and Asia. Hopefully the price will drop a little if and when the laptop is released in the US, because 699 Euros is nearly $1000 dollars, which means that at that price, the Samsung X120 would cost about twice as much as the Dell Inspiron 11z or Acer Aspire 1410.

On the other hand, Notebook Review spotted a more detailed set of specs on Samsung’s web site, and it indicates that the company may make Pentium, Core 2 Solo, and Core 2 Duo versions of this laptop available, which should provide a bit more oomph than the Intel Celeron 723 processor. Enough oomph to justify the high price? You be the judge.

Update: I don’t think this was the 11.6 inch model, but the Engadget folks got a Samsung rep to demonstrate just how sturdy an X Series laptop was by standing it out. Hit up Engadget for a video.

Update 2: The Samsung X120 web page is now live, and we have more details on the specifications, although they’re reportedly subject to change. These specs definitely help justify the laptop’s reported price tag, although I’m still hoping it will cost a bit less if and when it’s released in the US. Here are the highlights:
