gma 500 update

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 500 driver update

One of the biggest complaints I had with the Asus Eee PC T91 was it felt rather sluggish thanks to its low power 1.33GHz Intel Atom Z520 processor and integrated GMA 500 graphics. But it looks like Intel has released an updated GMA 500 driver for Windows XP which some users are reporting improves streaming video performance on the Eee PC T91 and other netbooks with similar graphics.

From the initial reports I’ve read, you shouldn’t expect miracles. But some YouTube and other Flash videos may play a little more smoothly. I don’t have a T91 or other GMA 500 equipped netbook handy at the moment, so if you’ve had a chance to try out the new driver on the Eee PC T91, Dell Inspiron Mini 10, Acer Aspire One 751, or another machine with this graphics chipset, let us know about your experiences in the comments.

You can read more about the new driver in the release notes.

Update: Chippy at UMPC Portal installed the new drivers and ran some tests on a Viliv X70 UMPC with GMA 500 graphics. With the new drivers, the system scored higher benchmarks, but Chippy says overall the changes were mostly imperceptible in everyday use.

there you go man, that was bugging me for ages now i can play starcraft on my msi wind! although there is no vga output with this driver but if you need to you can just rollback to the stock one. hope that helps
  • My #1 flash video tip for the GMA 500: pick a fast browser. Personally, I've been using SRWare Iron, which is Google Chrome with all of Google's spyware (my browser history is my business, not theirs) stripped out. Whatever they did, this browser just runs Flash faster.

Chrome/Iron is much faster than IE8 and Firefox. I can get SD YouTube running full screen just fine, though it chokes on HD. Hulu works SD windowed perfectly, but runs at 10-15 fps when I fullscreen the SD, and fewer when I try windowed HD. Amazon rentals work great.

Netflix has been working fine fullscreen in IE, and I've gotted HD Xvid and various other local video files running fine fullscreen in Winamp (which uses DirectShow) and VLC.

I'll try the new driver now and see if it buys me HD YouTube or fullscreen Hulu, but overall I've been pleasantly surprised at what I've been able to do already, given the reviews I had read of the GMA500. I'll report back after trying it out.
  • My impression so far: I may have picked up a couple more frames on things like fullscreen Hulu, but not enough to make a difference between watchable and not.

Any hope for us Dell Mini 12 uses running Ubuntu? This GMA chipset is a real albatross, hopefully these Intel upgrades will filter down to us?

I hope it does, but I'm unwilling to purchase any machine incorporating the GMA 500 simply because I don't see it happening any time soon.
