Pixel Qi’s new 3qi display is designed to let users switch between a high contrast, low power ePaper mode and a fully saturated color mode. Pixel Qi founder Mary Lou Jepsen already showed us what the ePaper mode looks like the other day. Now she’s uploaded a video showing the screen playing a movie in full color mode.

The screen is able to handle playback at up to 60fps. And while it’s hard to judge the image quality in a 9 second video of a netbook playing video… the results look promising. You can check out the super short clip after the break.

Update: Techvideoblog has a much, much longer video interview featuring Pixel Qi COO John Ryan and two netbooks showing the display’s ePaper and full color modes. I’ve posted that video after the break as well.

Wow, now we're getting somewhere. I'd like to see what the screen looks like as it transitions from a low to high ambient light scenario. I can see this having applications for advertising screens in shop windows, where the ad would be visible in bright daylight (black and white) and nighttime (fully color ad).
Of course, I want one for my next notebook so that I can use it in daylight as well as normal lighting.

Want want want! Paired with an Ion chipset this would rock, the screen low power draw would compensate for the chipset's slightly higher power draw.
