Does this BMW branded netbook make any sense to you? At all?

Netbooks are small, light, and portable. But most of all, they’re cheap. That’s one of the biggest things setting netbooks apart from the small and light laptops of yesteryear. You know what’s not cheap? BMW automobiles. Yet for some reason, there appears to be a BMW branded netbook out there complete with a BMW logo on the lid.

I get the feeling that this Chinese netbook isn’t actually sanctioned by BMW, but I could be wrong. Under the hood, this 10.2 inch netbook apparently sports a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU, 1GB of RAM, and a 160GB hard drive, as well as the usual Intel 945GSE chipset and integrated GMA 950 graphics. It measures 10.4″ x 7.2″ x 1.1″. And I could be wrong, but I think the chrome bits on the side of the netbook are designed to look a bit like hub cabs.

    To answer the opening question: NO.

    I guess they're trying to follow in the footsteps of Acer and Asus with their (marginally less misguided) but genuine supercar brandings. Sadly someone forgot to tell them what most of the world thinks about BMWs and their drivers – with sincere apologies to any there might be here rather than cutting up law-abiding motorists.

    P.S. Ugly, indeed fugly.

    Maybe it is not supposed to be opened, because then the logo is turned upside down – bmw designers would probably have recognized that ;-)

    Why wouldn't it make sense? BMWs are serious cult cars and the enthusiast are willing to drop extra cash for the logo.

    Well, fake or not, a premium netbook is a contradiction in terms if you believe that term implies something about low cost as well as actual specifications. I for one am willing to allow a netbook to range from low price to medium price depending on configuration.

    But we don’t need the type of wackiness we see with Acers premiums computers or with Sony’s VAIO P, over $600 and you are drifting into something that is not a netbook even if it also isn’t a notebook either.

    Sorry, folks. I see this as a healthy sign of the exuberant anything goes capitalism that is so crucial to the netbook space. If you're looking for a marketplace that is wildly innovative look for one that has players willing to take a flyer on something marginal, even some things that to calmer eyes look ill-considered. Would I buy this? Hell, no. Do I consider it a very promising bellweather for netbboks overall? Hell, yes.

    The spelling of “communication” is interesting also, though at least it only needs to be fixed in their Photoshop mockup, that surely being all this is.
