My 4 year old (and still running flawlessly) ThinkPad T42 and millions of other IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad could also be described as "stunningly bland looking".

Brad, not that bland. It has a built in multi card reader and is all matte finish (shell and screen). Both are advantages over many of the other units available as far as I am concerned. In this world of "me to" netbooks the little things make a difference. It would be nice if more manufacturers took a few risks but it doesn't seem very likely in this economy.

How about Viewsonic differentiating by offering a higher resolution than the 10" netbook standard? Just how much more is Microsoft charging for XP on a resolution higher than 1024x600 anyway? It seems that all but a couple of netbook makers refuse to differentiate.

If the netbook producers offered the higher resolution with Ubuntu installed I'm guessing plenty of us would just retire an old XP license and install it on the netbook. Eventually Microsoft would capitulate or Windows 7 would hit and be made an affordable option.

Netbooks producers need to get out of the boring 1024x600 rut and absolutely drop the glossy screen nonsense. How about a Samsung NC15 with a 1280x800 11" non glossy screen?
