While the netbook space is becoming saturated with models that have 10 inch displays and big hard drives, some folks prefer a good old 8.9 inch screen and solid state memory. Netbooks like the Eee PC 901 are smaller, lighter, and more durable than some of the newer kids on the block. And if you can spot the right bargain, they can also be substantially cheaper.

For instance, ZipZoomfly is selling the Asus Eee PC 901 for $249.99 including free shipping today only. This model comes in black and has an 8.9 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU, 12GB solid state disk, 1GB of RAM, and 802.11b/g/n. It comes with a 6 cell battery, a 1.3MP webcam, and runs Windows XP Home.

I may repeat this question in June when I expect to make a purchase. What is the best netbook for somebody who is cheap, wants something closer to two pounds than to three pounds, and will use the little computer mostly for word-processing and net browsing?. Also will seldom be more than a couple of hours away from a wall socket so the battery is no big deal. As my other computers are Macs, I have no problem with learning basic Linux but can live with Windows. (I starting computing with CP/M on a Kaypro). I assume that within my frugal price range I need to make a priority of the keyboard and the display.

June will be a much better time as there will be a slew of new models announced at the Computex show.

So after that time you will have either the new models to choose from, or cheaper prices on the older models as they are cleared out.
