When Asus first announced plans to develop a cheap mini-laptop way back in the dark ages of 2007, the company said the price could be as low as $200. In the two years since, netbook prices have settled for the most part in the $300 to $500 range. But that’s for brand new devices. A funny thing happens when companies have had a product on the market for a few months: They start to mark the prices down before releasing updated versions. The other day Buy.com started offering the Acer Aspire One for $259, and now you can pick up a Dell Inspiron Mini 9n Laptop Computer for just $249.
It looks like $200 laptops might not be that far away.
The Dell deal will get you a netbook with an 8.9 inch display, a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU, 512MB of RAM, a 4GB SSD, and Ubuntu 8.04.1 Linux. According to the Dell website, this is a limited offer which ends includes free 2nd day shipping, but which ends at 2/12 at 6am CT.
