We’ve already seen that early builds of Windows 7 run pretty smoothly on netbooks with 1.6GHz Intel Atom processors including the MSI Wind U100, Asus Eee PC 1000H, and others. But what about an older machine like the Asus Eee PC 900 which sports a 900MHz Intel Celeron CPU?

It turns out Windows 7 runs reasonably well on the  Eee PC 900 too. Blogger multimolti has even put together a tutorial explaining how to install Windows 7 on an Eee PC 900 using a USB flash drive (in case you don’t have a USB DVD drive).

While Windows 7 will run on this machine, it’s worth noting that the Eee PC 900 doesn’t seem to be capable of handling the Aero graphic interface. Of course, the computer probably runs faster with Aero shut off anyway, but it’s always fun to install eye candy just to impress your friends for a few minutes before you decide you actually need to be productive and turn off the unecessary graphics features.

You can check out a video of Windows 7 in action on the Eee PC 900 after the break.

  1. sir.. how can use my mini webcam on my asus pc 900.. im running a windows 7 os.

  2. I have been following up on every instruction about installing W7 on PC900 but so far, I can’t get by USB bootable using bootsect. Everytime it starts but replies back to prompt, no message, not even for help. Any ideas?

  3. I too would like to know how this is possible. I want to try this, but as other people have pointed out, this machine only has 4GB SSD. Is that right? Did the machine you did this with have more than that? Help!

  4. For those that are wondering what the truth is and just getting annoyed by the other comments: Yes Windows 7 runs on the 900 and runs WELL. The previous users did something wrong. Windows 7 runs as fast on my Eee as XP.
BUT, you need to vLite it if you only have the stock SSD, you need 2G of RAM (most likely), and install does take a long time. After that it’s smooth.

  5. how the hell does w7 fit on the eee 900? it has only 4 g disk and one of 16 g, wich is slower, and the system requirements for windows 7 say that it needs 16 g…

    1. If you dont try it you cant express your opinion.
I sent this message from an Asus Eee PC 900.
Try to practice else don’t bother with comments that confuses people.

  6. I actually did this on windows 7 BETA download, I found it like a dog to run, not to mention how long it took to install (2+ hours).

Bootup took around a minute, programs hung when starting, and there seemed a general lag.

No way this will be usable as is, I lasted about an hour then got cheesed off with the lag.

Think I’ll try android next, but by far the best experience I have foudn out of the box is mandriva with kde4.1, works smooth and all hardware supported

  7. lol…wat a noob comp..
windows7 requirement is lower than vista
n the new windows7 on tat noob comp is new install tats mean no 3rd party soft on it but still slow like shit on booting…throw it to recycle bin!!

      1. actually most of the asus eee pc 900’s have a 16gb ssd and 1 gb of ram.
Windows 7 minnimum spec is 1gb processor and 1gb ram.
although i have sucsessfully installed and ran it on an old 600mhz desktop just out of interest.

    1. Frankly speaking, it’s not advisable to install Windows 7 to an Asus Eee PC 900 unless it is your intention to “show off” that machine is running said software. The best software to run it is Windows XP.

By the way, Eee PC 900 is not noob. It all just depend on who will use the computer. For me I use a desktop on regular basis and use Eee PC on my software demos.

  8. It never ceases to amaze me the machines on whihch people try to squeeze things like OS X and Windows 7… Well done all!
