Laptop Magazine has posted a full review of that Lenovo IdeaPad S10 netbook they unboxed yesterday. The verdict? It’s a decent little laptop for the price (about $449), but there’s not much to set it apart from similarly priced netbooks like the Asus Eee PC 1000H or the MSI Wind.

The IdeaPad S10 appears to have a relatively speedy hard drive. It performed better on HDD tests than most netbooks in its class. And it ships with CyberLink OneKey recovery software, which lets you create a disk image of your system for easy backup and restore jobs.

But it has a smaller, more cramped keyboard than other netbooks with 10 inch displays. And it ships with a 3 cell battery, which provides just over 2 hours and 20 minutes of battery life. You can get twice the battery life with a 6 cell Asus Eee PC 1000H which runs about the same price.

  1. it’s not hard to get a discount to compensate a bit for the delay. i was reluctant to make a fuss, but i didn’t have to. I called 2 days ago simply to ask when mine would arrive. i ordered it 8/19, and had a ship date of 9/23. the agent said i would have a “slight” delay, and that it would ship 10/20. “that’s not very slight,” i said, “i need it for school.” that’s it. the agent said she would submit a request, without my having to ask. it’s worth trying– many others have had similar results.

  2. Actually, there are a few things that set the S10 apart, but in negative ways.

    1) Lenovo support and communication = worst ever from a computer manufacturer. Until the S10s began to arrive in customer hands, we didn’t even know the exact specs of the boxes we bought, only what we originally *thought* we bought based on their website.

    2) And as for arrival, everyone’s orders were delayed, with dates pushed back to November and even December without any information from Lenovo on the delays… and then some ship this week? Wtf?

    3) The exact specs as substituted and delivered are underwhelming. They built it up on their site, but then shipped a device without the advertised bluetooth and with only an 80GB drive. Add to this that the RAM can likely only be increased to 1.5GB rather than the mentioned 2GB because Lenovo soldered only 512MB onto the mobo instead of 1GB.

It’s a nice looking netbook, but I won’t be buying anything from Lenovo again until they get their flawed customer service/sales/marketing groups together for a complete re-training.

      1. im hoping that lenovo can do better with nice products and good services….

  3. I was quick to pre-order an S10, but when it became clear that Lenovo had no idea when it was shipping, I canceled. I picked up an open box Asus 1000H/XP for $359, cheaper than the S10 and with a better battery. Lenovo’s loss I guess, but they really mismanaged the launch of this product in a way that leaves me wondering if I can trust them to make a decent product. It does look good though, imo, better looking than the Asus 1000 or Acer One.

    1. Agreed, it does look sharp. But after Laptop’s article, I just canceled my (delayed) order. I can live with the battery life, but the reason I’m getting a 10″ screen was for the larger keyboard. “Cramped” doesn’t work for me. Guess I’ll be keeping an eye out for deals on a 6 cell Eee 1000H or MSI Wind. Unless Apple does something crazy in the next few weeks…

      1. I’m the exact opposite. The battery life worries me (more so the lack of an upgrade option) but the fact at it has a 10″ screen without a huge bezel is a big selling point for me. Come on eBay, where is the crazy large 9 cell battery made by so no-name chinese company? Plus, if you look around the web you can find an easy way to get the S10 for about $390.

      2. in fact the s10 keybroad is not cramped…it was designed well… and fit hands well……
