I just got an email from a Liliputing reader named Mitch who found an online retailer claiming to have the Acer Aspire One in stock. There’s just one problem: Acer isn’t selling these computers yet. Wait, make that two problems. Mercantec says they’re selling the notebook for $320, which is a good $60 below the price Acer is expected to ask. How often do you see that deep a discount before something even hits the shelves.

Anyway, Mitch contacted Mercantec to see if the company had any units in stock, and he received a short reply saying yes, and asking how many he wanted. Smells pretty fishy to me. If anyone wants to take the plunge and spend $320 to find out if this is a scam, please let me know how it goes.

using a credit card would be ok (i guess even if it's though paypal since they have some coverage up to a certain amount, I think $1000) but they ask to place the order through email, you can't order online. What happened to me several years ago was that after trying to place the order with credit card i was contacted that their credit card processing wasn't working at that time and to send the money through western union. And I fell for it... and 1 grand fell out of my pocket...

They also list the Asus eee PC 2G *and* 4G at $250 and the 8G at $350 (vs. $299, $399 and $499 respectively at other vendors). The MSI Wind lists for $400, which I assume is the XP version going elsewhere for $479. The "Place orders via e-mail" comment on their product order pages makes you wonder about their legitimacy.

Just use a credit card and there is nothing to lose.
