None of the bios updates are relevant - now HP is telling me several different things at once. Sigh...

But better news where WPA2 is concerned. Using Liliputing's name made the tech talk to someone who actually knows something and I got an updated response - which a fix that actually seems relevant. I'm not able to test it now, but thought folks should be aware of it:

I just got a list of bios updates from HP support that supposedly help with battery issues – I haven't tried them yet.

More importantly, they responded that the Mini 1000 does NOT support WPA2 – I poked around on-line and am guessing that the problem is the wireless card, which is to a pre-WPA standard. http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php...

I never would have thought to check this type of compatibility on a new netbook and now realize that, blogs like Liliputing and all, I need to research the compatibility of EVERY component before I buy, which stinks. I'll post on the HP Mini blog to see if anyone has upgraded the card and how it went. Otherwise, I may be in the market for yet another new netbook – once I know which new system makes the best hackintosh…

HP is understating the width of the Mini 1000 by 1.5 inches! It is 6.5″, not 5″ – maybe they hired Sony's copywriters?

Hi Brad:

I'm on my second netbook (HP Mini 1000) and have been using it during a trip to remote parts of India. Here are some quirks that don't come up in reviews that you might want to look at when reviewing other models:

1) when the battery starts to drain, you need to turn it off, plug it in and turn it back on if you want it to work on electricity and not further drain the battery. I'm assuming that this is some sort of hardware compromise. I wonde.r how many other netbooks work this way. It took me a while to figure out how to make it bypass the battery.

2) Even though it comes with XP / SP 3, it won't connect to a wireless network with WPA security. MS swears that SP 3 supports WPA so I wonder what's going on here. This REALLY limits its usability. I wonder if this is an issue with other netbooks.

FYI: I have waited almost 7 weeks for delivery of a Dell Mini 9 with 16Gb SSD. I live in Eastern Canada. The netbook was ordered in early January, and there's no sign that it's shipping soon. If anyone has inside info on this, I'd like to hear it.
