    Hi,
You might want to know about this re-branded MSI WIND that should be available here in the Czech Republic in August:
    http://www.mivvy.eu/index.php?page=m310
Even though the site is in Czech, the specifications should be clear.
Let me just point out that compared to MSI, Mivvy will have 2GB of RAM and 120 GB HDD !
At first it should come with a 3-cell battery, but a 6-cell battery is already listed as an optional accessory.
From what I have gathered, the price (Linux/3-cell batery version) should start at around $630, which is about $130 cheaper than the Linux/3-cell battery version of MSI Wind available here (plus double the RAM and 120 GB of HDD space!).
This seems to be quite a competitor for MSI Wind in the Czech Republic ;-)

    Martin Bednarski

    Brad:

I read (and enjoy) your Liliputing posts using Google Reader.

Everything seems to be working as before, except that when viewed in Goole Reader, your posts say "by admin" instead of "by Brad Linder" like they used to.
  • Yeah, I noticed that too. I might try to fix that this week, but it's not a
high priority since almost every post is written by me.

    Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks for the tip about the "MSI Wind with 6 cell battery now available." I bought one of the two in stock at MWave.

With 2 day air, my total was $591.40. Yep, that's a bit expensive. But, with the Wind sold out everywhere, demand is apparently high, so price goes up - Econ 101. I want time to try XP and experiment with Linux before school starts.

    Hi,

thought I'd let you know about this - if you follow this link:

near the top of the article (just under the headline). If you're visiting an

The comparison chart is helpful. I would suggest:
    1. Keep measurement units consistent in any column:
Ex: Only use GB for Ram so sorts OK: 0.512 GB instead of 512 MB
    2. More columns to separate data for better sorting:
Ex: Separate Min & Max values into two columns.
Ex: Separate display size and pixel count.
Ex: Separate connectivity into columns by type.
Ex: Separate storage type and size.
    3. When various models are available show on separate lines.
Ex: Storage type SSD and HD

I owned an Airis Kira Linpus model for 24 hours. It went back to the shop as the Linpus software was unable to make a wireless connection. It was able to see Wifi networks but hung when trying to connect. This was a promotion run by a national newspaper to move 20 000 units at 299€ apiece. I did not want the XP version as with 512 only, I cant imaging how the performance might have been.
I was disappointed since the rest of features of the machine were attractive, incl the webcam

find it disappointing that your chart comparing "liliputian computers" won't fit on my "normal" screen, even with its resolution set higher than the capabilities of any of the computers you're comparing.

Suggestion for improvement to the Liliputer chart: Add filter checkboxes so you can filter the computers that are of interest to you. Some sample filters might be screen size (7", 8.9", and 10+"), SSD v. HD, Atom processor, HD size, screen resolution, cost, etc.

From what I could gather on the net this particular netbook bears a MIPS 400 processor and uses a 2.4 Linux kernel. The user manual can be found here :
    http://www.skytone.net.cn/download/Alpha400User...
There is a "control panel" to set Networking, Sound, Date+time and User ; but nothing about adding a printer. Moreover, there does not seem to be any UPDATE SOFTWARE manager of any kind.
The practical thing would be to email the manufacturer as adding a printer does not seem an option.
Obviously your printer needs software to operate, pluging the USB does not suffice. If a kernel module is needed, it will have to be specially prepared (compiled) for the MIPS processor.
    Regards.

    Hello
I would like to say TANK YOU for your review of the notebooks available, which is certainly the most complete on the net.
My personal choice goes to the GDIUM. It's processor seems very impressive, uses RISC instruction set, 64 bits, and dissipates very low heat. Therefore, there is no need for a heatsink fan. Thus, without a traditional hard drive, the machine will be completely noiseless. Moreover, I understood all the software is set to run on a 64 bits mode, which means FAST computing.
Your notes on this particular notebook and the different Linux flavours to be found out there end with a series of questions.
I would like to return to you the same idea, not on computers but on cars.
Imagine you went to a garage more than 50 years ago, to buy yourself a new car.
You ask the sales attendant for the different colours available. And he would reply to you there is only one : BLACK. Next, you would like to choose the motor, and the vendor would respond there is only one motor. Are you satisfied ???
No, you don't want to choose between a Black T Ford, and a Black T Ford, you want CHOICE.
Linux, and free sofware is all about CHOICE and customization. My life has changed since I left MS operating systems 4 years ago. It took me some time to learn, but I will never go back.
    Yours Truly,
    Alejandro GOMEZ

    Aloha Brad,

I have been perusing your site for sometime and appreciate all the work you do and the "help" I’ve gotten from your site thus far.

I'm getting a bit dizzy though trying to keep it all straight with sooo many netbooks and umpc's available.

Hoping you can narrow the field down for me. I don‘t wish to pay more then $800.00 and my needs are pretty simple:

~ fast and dependable connectivity for wifi

~ small & light weight, one I don’t need to scroll back and forth to read all the time

~ one I can see the screen clearly in the direct sunlight and work at the beach if needed

    ~ one I won’t wreck at the beach ;-)

~ a longer battery life would be appreciated for those beach days too

All I do is tons of e-mail for my job and surf the web. Spell check and some kind of word processor thingy would be welcome as I‘m a horrid speller and e-mail spell check takes to long.

Any help and suggestions you can give me would be greatly appreciated as I need a new computer…. yesterday!

To any UK readers out there:
I've just had an email through from Expansys (expansys.com) regarding a promotion that will be running tomorrow (Friday). Between the hours of 11am and 4pm (BST), Expansys will be dropping the price of the white EeePC 701 Surf (4GB) to £117.99. I don't want to embarrass us both with lavish praise, but this site is unique in that it surveys the entire netbook field and summarizes all the late-breaking news literally from sites all over the world, providing links to the original sources.

This allows people like me to have an easy one-stop jumping-off point to pursue our interests in as much detail as we like, or we can just stay here and discuss them with knowledgable bloggers to our heart's content.

Now, on top of all this you keep improving the netbook database! It's much easier to use now that we can see the whole field at once and consolidate the models we want to compare. (Previously, I just printed the whole thing out.)

As I've said before in the blogs, this database has saved me hours of searching and re-searching for data as my interests have gone from one unit to another, and I'm very grateful for this service.

Of course, the database chart has a limited number of columns and a decision has to made as to what info and specs to include in the chart and what to relegate to the product datasheets only.

If these decisions are not already set, I, being something of an information freak, would favor more information over the lack of a "busy" looking chart. This would make it a little easier to compare more data between selected units.

If necessary, some specs could be doubled up in the same cell with related information, such as RAM + max RAM, status + price, dimensions + weight, and screen size + resolution. If this is not practical, I'm certainly not going to complain, because now you've made it so easy to go to the datasheets.

As for the datasheets, I would like to have as much information as possible on them, since I'm not the one who would have to search it out, keep track of it, and update it :)

Any information available about chipsets, wifi adapters, open mini-PCIe slots, built-in 3G antennae, and the like would be great. (I know a lot of this is seldom available and changes without notice, etc... this is beginning to sound like another full-time job :)

    In any case, thanks again!
  • wpwise
I am in the market for a netbook to replace my Toshiba Libretto U105. I have narrowed my choices to the MSI Wind and Asus Eee PC 1000h. Leaning toward the Asus because I can upgrade the RAM and HDD fairly easily.

I will be using it when I travel for work and making presentations.

But I need the straight skinny here, What do you recommend and why?
  • Unfortunately it's not that clear cut. Some people prefer the Asus because
it has 802.11n and a multi-touch keypad and a trusted brand name in the
netbook space. Others prefer the MSI Wind because it has a more conventional
keyboard layout (the right-shift key is not to the right of the up-arrow),
may get better battery life according to some tests, and runs OS X pretty
    well.

It really comes down to a matter of preference. I cannot say which netbook
    is right for you.

    <http://www.liliputing.com>
  • wpwise
Thanks for an honest reply. You do understand the quandary that I am in. I
will most likely go with Asus, mainly because of the name. From what I
read, battery life is close and I think the Asus is easier to upgrade to 2
GB RAM and a larger HDD.

Nice site and useful reviews, I would appreciate if the fan/no fan or otherwise known as noise/no noise spec. would be in the main list however. So far the only netbook I know of lacking a fan is dell's inspiron 9. Since it lacks in other areas I'm still looking for one.

I think you said it best "practically every netbook released in the last few months has a 1024 x 600 pixel display, an Intel Atom CPU, and similar storage and memory options." How about adding one unique criteria to your database? % of full keyboard size! That would be most helpful when deciding. Thanks.

Mystery Toshiba Netbook appears in Australia.

Hi Brad, A large Electronics retailer here in Australia is currently advertising a Toshiba NB100/C02 8.9" netbook for AUD$699 - I think that's about two bucks, fifty USD at the current exchange rate :-) - with a AUD$100 cashback offer. (for comparison in AUD: Acer Aspire One (XP) goes for $547, after $99 cashback, $599 EeePC 901-XPH and $539 MSI Wind U90 XPH) Availability is 10 Nov, 2008.
Strangely Dick Smiths know more about it than Toshiba do. I can't find anything on the Toshiba's websites.

    Hi Brad,

I have been enjoying your site very much. I am trying to remember one of the reviews which discusses which netbook has the best keyboard to type with. Which has got me thinking - would it be possible to some best lists to the site - best screen (biggest or brightest, etc) , best keyboard, longest battery life, and so on? These short lists could link through to the full length reviews and would provide an easy way to find the best netbook for your needs.

    cheers

I see the Samsung nc-10 has the power button on the outside in the end of the hinge. Does anyone know if you can turn it on without opening it? This would be great, since you can't really get a docking station for these little guys, and this way you don't have to keep opening and closing the lid when using an external monitor/keyboard.

What I am most interested in is a netbook with a (9 inch) rotating screen (aka 'convertible') like Acer's Travelmate. Hold it like a slate along with a couple of buttons(or rockerbar) in the top/bottom--left/right of the screen (that function as page up/page down) (should be programmable/swappable for southpaws)...this would be a Kindle-killer! (A touch screen would be nice, but that would be more expensive right now than a netbook should be).

"Thank you again for your order. We have been informed today that Samsung has now increased the cost price of the NC10 considerably, which unfortunately means that we are forced to increase our selling price accordingly. "
"Samsung expect to have stock of all colours (Black, Blue and White) available by 12 December and the new price is GBP 295 pounds ex VAT (GBP 346.63 inc VAT)."

The old price was ~50£ less.

I need a few keys for my eeepc 701 pearl white. My son is 2 1/2 and he somehow got my eee and peeled some keys off. Its not a warranty thing obviously but I wonder if you know where I could buy replacement keys, even used from some modder or something. I’m only missing two keys and a few of the spring things that hold them in, key mounts?

    If it helps any -

I’m missing both brackets keys but have the mounts, missing mounts for O P and ” but have the keys.

Any direction or assistance would be great, if not thanks anyway.

I can think of one reason for the touch screen net book, IF you are a frequent flier, and more importantly if the screen rotates. I had thought the 12" HP laptop with touchscreen might be a good one to buy on its own merits, with the added benefit of being able to place the laptop on an airplane tray, swivel the screen and watch a movie up close. I ended up buying the Asus 1000h because of price and added portability, and really like it. I havent taken it on a plane yet, but am looking forward to in March. I wouldnt pay to convert my Asus, but had one been out with a swivel screen for not to much more $, I might have bought it. Let me know what you think.

can some one answer a question for me please. I'm having fun with my early Christmas present of an Acer Aspire 1. Been following, with interest, the posts about linux4one and just this morning downloaded the English RC2. My problem is I don't have a DVD drive to burn the ISO to so need to make a thumb drive bootable. In one of the posts here, IIRC, there was a link to info on how to do this. Problem is I can't find it now. Help ?

Hi, heres a lil tip about my CTL 2go buying experience, thought it might be useful to know.

I was one of the first people to jump on the CTL 2go with 6 cell battery offer, I bought it before you updated that the current price is 499.99. The page said that it would ship within 1-2 business days. The next day I got an email from a rep named Hannah that they were backed up and couldn't ship for 1-2 weeks. I shot back a short reply asking for refunded shipping if it wasn't going to make it in the time they originally stated (even though I got the regular UPS ground). Today I got an email that they are going to refund that much and apologized for the delay.

Since, in my experience, these small gestures are hard to come by from e-shops, thought it was worth mentioning.

Although we are going to publish the official pictures in mid February here some preliminary information:

    Hi Brad:

I'm on my second netbook (HP Mini 1000) and have been using it during a trip to remote parts of India. Here are some quirks that don't come up in reviews that you might want to look at when reviewing other models:
    . t
    1) when the battery starts to drain, you need to turn it off, plug it in and turn it back on if you want it to work on electricity and not further drain the battery. I'm assuming that this is some sort of hardware compromise. I wonde.r how many other netbooks work this way. It took me a while to figure out how to make it bypass the battery.

    2) Even though it comes with XP / SP 3, it won't connect to a wireless network with WPA security. MS swears that SP 3 supports WPA so I wonder what's going on here. This REALLY limits its usability. I wonder if this is an issue with other netbooks.
  • A
I just got a list of bios updates from HP support that supposedly help with battery issues - I haven't tried them yet.

More importantly, they responded that the Mini 1000 does NOT support WPA2 - I poked around on-line and am guessing that the problem is the wireless card, which is to a pre-WPA standard. http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php...

I never would have thought to check this type of compatibility on a new netbook and now realize that, blogs like Liliputing and all, I need to research the compatibility of EVERY component before I buy, which stinks. I'll post on the HP Mini blog to see if anyone has upgraded the card and how it went. Otherwise, I may be in the market for yet another new netbook - once I know which new system makes the best hackintosh...
